Reference a record by internal ID
The internal ID is a unique identifier assigned automatically to each record at its creation. It is the safest option when you want to reference an existing record in your import file, as the system guarantees the uniqueness of the internal ID.
You can see a record’s internal ID at the end of its URL when you open it in QuickStart.
Alternatively, you can also find a record’s internal ID when you export the data from a record list page. On the record list page, open Actions and select Download view. In the downloaded file you can find the internal ID in the first column.
When you want to relate an existing record to the record you are importing, you can edit the header, add the (id) option and use the internal ID instead.
In this case, to reference the company record in your contact import using the internal ID, you change the header from Company to Company (id).
| Company (id) | *First name | *Last name | Mobile phone number |

If your goal is to update an existing contact, then you must enter the contact’s internal ID in the Internal ID column. This way the system can identify the correct contact to update.
