Get started with custom fields

When the standard fields that QuickStart provides don’t meet your needs for the information you want to collect, you can create a custom field for your records. A custom field enables you to capture information specific to your business needs. Before creating a custom field, you should verify that a suitable custom field doesn’t already exist.

As a user with the account administrator access profile or the additional Customization: create fields and segments permission set assigned, you can customize the record you’re working in. You can create and add a new custom field or add a custom field that was already created elsewhere. You can also customize fields from the Customization section Fields page.

You can create various types of fields, such as text, number, checkbox, and dropdown list. The type of field you choose depends on the type of information you want to collect and how you’ll use it.

You can add, edit, or remove custom fields. When you add a custom field, it appears on all new or existing records of the type you’re customizing. You can also add the field to other records, as needed.

For example, suppose you add a new checkbox field to a sales order. That new field will automatically appear on all new or existing sales orders. If the new field also applies to purchase orders, you can have it appear on those also.
