Get started with taxes
Tax records determine where sales tax applies, which authority receives it, which accounts record it, the applicable rates, and when a customer is exempt. Use Menu > Accounting > Settings > Taxes to manage jurisdictions, agencies, tax types, tax codes, and exemption certificates that QuickStart uses for tax calculation and reporting.
Set up the records in this order when they are not provisioned automatically:
- Create the tax agency that receives the tax.
- Create the tax jurisdiction for the country and state or region.
- Create a tax type and associate the jurisdiction with the tax account for sales.
- Create a tax code that defines the tax behavior and rates.
- Create customer exemption certificates when applicable.
Do not create duplicate records that were provisioned from your sales tax registrations. Open Menu, select Accounting > Settings, and review each list before creating a record.
Tax record lifecycle
Open an existing tax record to edit it. When a record is no longer needed but is referenced by transactions or other records, set it to inactive instead of deleting it. Delete a record only when QuickStart offers the delete action and the record is not in use.
