Create Performance Measures Based on Existing Measures

Determine the overall health of projects with predefined performance measures related to budgets and forecasts or create your own based on existing performance measures. The performance measures are used in KPIs, which helps project managers gain insight into project health.

  1. In the Setup and Maintenance work area, go to the Manage Performance Measures task.

  2. On the Manage Performance Measures page, select Custom in the Measure Category drop-down list, and click Search to get the list of custom performance measure sets.

  3. Click the custom performance measure set that you want to define measures for.

  4. On the Edit Performance Measure page, select the corresponding custom member from either the Accounts Member or Scenario Member drop-down list.

Note: Select the format of your custom performance measure judiciously such that it aligns with the formats of the predefined measures used in the custom performance measure calculation.
  5. Select the Use Time Dimension Member in Formula check box if you want to use a time member in the formula.

Note: If you select this check box, then only one performance measure that's unrelated to a time member is displayed in the Edit Performance Measure page.
  6. Enter the formula in the Formula field or click the Define Formula icon to define the formula using the custom measure calculator.

Note: If you're using the calculator, then after you select the Accounts Member, Scenario Member, and the Time Member (only if you selected the Use Time Dimension Member in Formula check box), click the Go icon to include them in the formula. Also, after you enter a number, click the Go icon next to it for the multiplier to be included in the formula.
  7. Select the Enabled for Use check box to enable the custom performance measure for use.

  8. Optionally, add related measures that are relevant to the custom performance measure so you can view them in the Analyze KPI page.

  9. Click Save and Close.

  10. Go to the Manage Key Performance Indicators task and attach the custom performance measure to a KPI.

  11. Attach the KPI to the project, as follows:

    1. Go to Projects > Project Financial Management.

    2. In the My Projects page, right-click the project and select Manage Financial Project Settings.

    3. In the Manage Financial Project Settings page, click Reporting.

    4. Click the Add icon under the Key Performance Indicators section.

    5. In the Add KPI to Project dialog box, select the KPI to attach to the project from the Name drop-down list. Also, select the check boxes under the Track KPI Settings section as appropriate, and click Save and Close.

    6. Click Done.

  12. Run the Update Project Performance Data process.

Once this process completes successfully, you can view the data for the custom performance measures for the project on the Review Project Performance page. You can also view the KPI in the Health infolet of the Project Management dashboard.
