Optimizing Need with SAI for Less than 9 Months

Included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act was the removal of provisions that allowed schools to use an alternate SAI proration when packaging students for periods other than 9 months. To reduce need analysis burden for students, we have enhanced our summer need calculation to use the Cost of Attendance (COA) and Other Financial Assistance (OFA) for standard term periods.

Direct Loan Needs Analysis Updates

Provides the ability to calculate the needs analysis for subsidized loans using the established loan period for the academic year.

  • When the academic year contains two loan periods, a separate needs analysis calculation will be applied for each loan period.
    • The calculated SAI will be applied to each needs analysis calculation.
  • The term COA and Other Financial Assistance (OFA) for the needs analysis will be based on the terms within the loan period.
    • COA/OFA will be excluded for periods of Less-Than Half-Time enrollment in the Subsidized loan needs analysis.

When opting-in to the Enhanced Calculation for Summer EFC feature, (Summer_EFC_SAI_Need_Calc column contains an effective date < AcY end date), the needs analysis has been updated:

  • The summer term needs analysis will use the COA and OFA based on the terms within the loan period containing the summer term (standard + summer).

FSEOG Needs Analysis Updates

Provides the ability to create a separate needs analysis calculation when a term/set of terms are separated by a period of non-attendance (enrollment status = not attending).

  • The calculated SAI will be applied to each needs analysis calculation.
  • The COA and OFA for the needs analysis will be based on the term/set of terms selected for the calculation.

When opting-in to the Enhanced Calculation for Summer EFC feature, the needs analysis has been updated:

  •  The summer need calculation will calculate need using the COA/OFA using the set of contiguous terms within the intended period of enrollment that include the summer (which can include standard terms).

Steps to Enable

  • Load a valid 24/25 ISIR and SAFI in order to package Title IV funds.
  • If you have funds that have been packaged prior to 24B, a re-package is required for the updated need calculation to take effect on Summer packaging. 

Tips And Considerations

  • For existing students with 23/24 ISIRs, the system will continue to project Title IV funding for 24/25 and future award years leveraging the 23/24 ISIR data and needs analysis using the EFC until a 24/25 ISIR is received and valid. 
  • Within the School.csv workbook, the Summer_EFC_Need_Calc column will be renamed to Summer_EFC_SAI_Need_Calc to reference applicability in 24/25.
    • The column will be updated in any export of configuration subsequent to the release.
