One of your ideas has been delivered from your suggestion.Backflush Lot and Serial-Controlled Materials During Operation Completion Using a REST API and File-Based Data Import

In high volume or standardized production environments, manufacturers want to simplify production reporting with the automatic, proportional consumption of materials based on actual usage, also known as backflushing. In addition, traceability of the lot and serial numbers for backflushed materials is important for industry and regulatory purposes. Scenarios could include integration with a mobile device such as a handheld barcode scanner, a manufacturing execution system, or a warehouse management system as the means for recording production completion.

Now you can report the completion quantity of a work order operation with specific lot and serial numbers for pull materials using the REST APIs and file-based data import (FBDI) for operation transactions in discrete and process manufacturing work orders. This capability can backflush one or multiple item lots and serials from the designated supply subinventory and locator.

  • For lot-controlled materials, lots can be manually specified or defaulted based on Manual, First In, First Out (FIFO) and First Expired, First Out (FEFO) logic, depending on the setting of the Lot Selection During Backflush plant parameter.
  • For serial-controlled materials, serial numbers can be manually specified for material backflush.

REST API Changes:

You can now backflush lot and serial enabled materials using the Work Order Operation Transactions REST API.

For lot enabled materials, if the Lot Selection During Backflush plant parameter is set to Manual, you must specify the lot details for the lot enabled materials. If it is set to Lot FIFO or Lot FEFO, system will automatically select the lot for materials.

For serial enabled materials, you must always specify the serial numbers of materials for Work Order Operation Transactions REST API.

File-Based Data Import (FBDI) Changes:

The FBDI for Work Order Operation Transaction Import (for Discrete Manufacturing) and Process Work Order Operation Transaction Import have been enhanced to allow the users to mention lot and serial details of materials. New worksheets have been included in both FBDI templates for specifying Material, Material Lot, and Material Serial Details.

Similar to REST, if the Lot Selection During Backflush plant parameter is set to Manual, you must specify the lot details for the materials. For Lot FIFO or Lot FEFO, system will automatically select the lot for materials.

For serial enabled materials, you must always specify the serial numbers of materials.

You can also include the descriptive flexfield values for the lots and serials reported.

Material backflush of lot and serial-controlled materials helps maintain traceability between the digital and physical worlds without impeding user productivity.

Tips And Considerations

  • You can set the Lot Selection During Backflush plant parameter to manual selection for specific lot and serial numbers or automatic FIFO or FEFO defaulting logic. If using detailed material reservations for a work order, it's recommended that you specify the same lot and serial numbers as in the reservation.
  • It's recommended to use the Work Order Operation Transaction REST API for point-to-point integration and FBDI for bulk upload.
  • You can use the Work Order Operation Transaction REST API or appropriate FBDI template to issue or return lot and serial-controlled backflush materials with the supply type of Operation Pull or Assembly Pull.
  • You can enable this feature in an existing implementation based on business needs and with following considerations:
    • Change the item supply type Push to Operation Pull or Assembly Pull in the work definition and work order operation.
    • Replace the Work Order Material Transaction REST APIs with the Work Order Operation REST APIs.
    • Replace the Work Order Material Transaction FBDI template with the appropriate Work Order Operation Transaction FBDI template for discrete or process manufacturing.
