Plan Multiple Outputs in Discrete Work Definitions

Previously, the ability to plan for items utilizing discrete work definitions with multiple outputs was available for constrained supply plans. In some circumstances, you had work definitions for an item that is the primary output in one work definition and is a secondary output (co-product) in another. With this update, you can now plan multiple outputs for discrete work definitions in unconstrained supply planning.

For example, consider a bidirectional discrete work definition. In one discrete work definition WD1, item B is generated as a co-product output while producing the primary item A. Operations op10 and op20 are associated with the discrete work definition WD1. Operation op20 produces both the primary and secondary output items. Resource 1 is utilized at op20. Primary item A consumes the component item R in its Item Structure with usage quantity as 2. Consider the defined output quantity as 0.4 for the co-product item B.

In another discrete work definition WD2, item A is generated as a co-product output while producing the primary item B. Operations op10 and op20 are associated with the discrete work definition WD2, and operation op20 produces both the primary and secondary output items. Resource 2 is utilized at op20. Primary item B consumes the component item S in its Item Structure with usage quantity as 2. Consider the defined output quantity as 0.6 for the co-product item A.

Based on the given scenario, where there is a forecast of 100 units and 70 units on day 5 and day 7 respectively for Item A, and 100 units of forecast on day 7 for Item B, here’s how the unconstrained supply plan will generate recommendations:

Supply Plan Recommendation

On day 5, there are planned order supplies of 100 units for item A, that also generate 40 units of planned order co-product supply for item B. Similarly, on day 7, there is a planned order supply of 34 units for item A, generating 14 units of planned order co-product supply for item B. The supply for item B on day 7 will result in an excess of 14 units.

On day 7, item B is prioritized for planning due to its higher demand compared to item A. The planned order co-product supply of 40 units for item B, produced alongside item A on day 5, partially fulfills the demand for item B on day 7. The remaining 60 units of planned order supply for item B is generated on day 7 using work definition WD2, which also produces 36 units of planned order co-product supply for item A on the same day.

Consumption details are as follows:

  • 200 units of item R on day 3.
  • 78 units of item R on day 5.
  • 120 units of item S on day 5.

Tips And Considerations

  • The primary product is completed at the final operation within the discrete manufacturing work definitions.
  • The output items can be associated with any operations within discrete manufacturing work definition
  • Items within a specific discrete manufacturing work definition can be associated as either Output or Component types for the operation.
  • For unconstrained plan, the items are planned as group set in a particular time bucket if defined as primary and secondary in one work definition and vice versa in other work definition.
