Support Custom File Extensions

Idea Lab

Previously, strict validation was implemented for file names and extensions uploaded to the system through attachment upload or file upload. The valid extensions are defined in a product delivered Managed Content record (F1-FileExtensionAllowList). The system now supports a custom allowlist so that you can add valid extensions supported by your implementation. Only authorized users can define the custom file extensions.

Note that, as documented in a separate feature, the file name validation is also expanded to other upload use cases.

Supporting custom file extensions allows you to continue using specialized file extensions that your implementation supports.

Steps to enable and configure

If your organization needs to support custom file extension:

  1. Be sure you have authorization to "add" managed content records.
  2. Go to Managed Content and search for F1-FileExtensionAllowList.
  3. Duplicate this record using the name to CM-FileExtensionAllowList. Be sure to use this exact name.
  4. Change the description and detailed description as desired.
  5. Remove the base delivered extensions.
  6. Add your valid extensions using the <extension></extension> tags.

Tips and considerations

The functionality documented here was available in version 26.4 through maintenance pack 1.3.3, bug 39092768.
