Value Rule Support for a Unified Search Hint Filter

Idea Lab

Currently, when a hint based Unified Search query is performed, there is no size limit on the entered filter value. For some searches this may cause performance issues.

You can associate a Unified Search hint filter definition, defined by the 'Search Filter Hint' extendable lookup, with an optional regular expression (regex) that qualifies the value the user enters as a valid filter value. When a hint is used and that hint is associated with such value expression, the search text is considered a valid filter value if it matches that regex. If the value does not match the regex, the search is not performed.

There is no change to hints without a value regex. Their value is used by the search without any value restriction.

Supporting a rule that qualifies the value of a hint based filter allows for performance improvement of hint-based unified search queries.

Steps to enable and configure

If there is a need to restrict the value entered when a unified search hint is used, complete these steps:

  1. Determine the value regex expression that should be used to qualify the entered value for that hint.
  2. Update the hint definition in the 'Search Filter Hint' extendable lookup with that regex value.
