The amount of cash or cash equivalent paid, or the fair value or other consideration given, to acquire material at the time of its acquisition or construction. For example, the cost of a purchased item is the amount used to purchase a unit of the item, whereas the cost of a manufactured item is the amount used to a produce a unit of the item.
