How You Set Up Items in Oracle Manufacturing

The items used in Manufacturing are created in the Product Information Management work area. You can create work definitions for standard items and ATO models. You can create work orders for only Standard & Configured Items. However, in a contract manufacturing organization, only standard items are supported.

The following table displays items and the attributes relevant while creating a work definition and a work order in Manufacturing:

Attribute Name Attribute Description Work Definition Work Order Notes
Build in WIP Indicates whether you can create discrete work orders and process work orders.

You can create a work definition for a Product Item or Primary Output Item when Build in WIP is set to either Yes or No.

You can create a work order for a Product Item or a Primary Output Item only when Build in WIP is set to Yes. When you need to create a work definition for a prototype, you may want the ability to create work definition. However, you still want to prevent work order creation until the production process is finalized. In such cases, you must set the Build in WIP to No.
Inventory Transaction Enabled

Indicates whether transactions can be performed on an item.

You can create a work definition for a Product Item or Primary Output Item when Transaction Enabled is set to either Yes or No. You can add an operation item when Transaction Enabled is set to either Yes or No.

You can create work order for a Product Item or a Primary Output Item only when Inventory Transaction Enabled flag is set to Yes.

Similarly, you can generally add material items to the work order, only when this flag is set to Yes. However, you can add material items with this flag set to No when the supply type is Bulk.

You can perform product and material transactions only if the inventory transaction flag is set to Yes.

Structure Item Type Indicates the type of bill of material the item can include such as standard, model, planning, and product family. You can't create a work definition for a PTO model, a PTO option class, an ATO option class, or for an item with planning or product family structure item type. Not applicable
Effectivity Control Indicates whether the structure of the item is a date effective structure or a model and unit effective structure. Model effective structures are typically associated with project manufacturing. You can create a work definition for an item with date effective structure only. Not applicable
Base Model

This attribute may be controlled at the master or organization level, depending on your setup.

Displays the model from which an ATO configuration was created. The configuration item lists the ordered model item as its base model.
You can't create a work definition for a configured item, which is created based on an ATO model. You can’t create work orders for an ATO model, ATO option class, PTO option class, and PTO model.
Autocreated Configuration

Indicates whether the item is automatically created.

If the base model is null, you can't select this attribute.
You can't create a work definition for a configured item, which is created based on an ATO model. You can create a work order for a configured item, which is created based on an ATO model.
Pick Components Indicates whether an item has a bill of material with options, classes, or included items that are picked from finished goods inventory. Pick-to-order items and models must be set to Yes. Assemble-to-order items and models and regular items (without a bill of material) must be set to No.

You can't create a work definition for a PTO model or a PTO option class.

You can't create a work order for a PTO model or a PTO option class.

Assemble to Order Indicates that the item is generally built for sales order demand; a final assembly work order is created based on sales order details. You can create a work definition for an ATO model, but not an ATO option class. You can’t create work orders for an ATO model and ATO option class.
Supply Type Represents the default supply type at the item level for the material item. Valid values are Push, Bulk, Supplier, Assembly Pull, Operation Pull, and Phantom. You can add an operation item for all supply types, that’s, Push, Bulk, Supplier Assembly Pull, Operation Pull, and Phantom. You can add an operation item with the following supply types: Push, Bulk, Supplier, Assembly Pull, and Operation Pull.
Outside Processing Service Indicates whether the item represents the outside processing service and can be added to a supplier operation in Oracle Manufacturing. When a supplier operation is defined in a work definition, then you need to associate an outside processing item (Outside Processing Service is set to Yes) to the supplier operation. When a supplier operation is added to the work order, then you need to associate an outside processing item (Outside Processing Service is set to Yes) to the supplier operation.
