Transform Assets Using a Maintenance Work Order

Complete asset transformation jobs using maintenance work orders. Create a maintenance work order and use it to transform one or more assets. After completion of the work order, update the asset's associated item to reflect the transformed asset's new form or function.

Asset transformation is a process of changing the form or function of an asset to increase its value, utility, and efficiency. For example, a car can be transformed into a hybrid or electric vehicle to reduce carbon emissions and maintenance costs.

Let's see how to create transform work orders for a single asset and multiple assets and then return the assets to inventory.

Create a Transform Work Order for a Single Asset and Return to Inventory

Do this on the Create Maintenance Work Order window:
  1. Select the Asset radio option and select an asset.
  2. Select a work order type and subtype.
  3. Assign a start date.
  4. Select a Target Item into which the asset's current associated item needs to change upon completion of the work order.
  5. Select the Allow completion to inventory checkbox.

This tracks return of the asset to inventory after it's transformed so that the transformed asset is available for planning and reservations.

  6. Save the work order.

Create a Transform Work Order for Multiple Assets and Return to Inventory

Do this on the Create Maintenance Work Order window:
  1. Select the Item radio option and select an item.
  2. Enter the quantity of assets to be transformed.
  3. Select work order type and subtype.
  4. Assign a start date.
  5. Select a Target Item into which the asset's current associated item needs to change upon completion of the work order.

Ensure that the target item has the same unit of measure as the asset’s pre-transformation item and belongs to the same work order organization as the asset’s current (pre-transformation) item.

  6. Save the work order.

After you save, the Edit Work Order page appears.

  7. On the Edit Work Order page, Assets tab, click Add to add the assets that you want to transform to a different item number.
  8. Next, under the General Information tab, Completion Information header, select the Allow completion to inventory checkbox.

This check box determines the serial generation policy of the target item. Also, selecting this checkbox tracks the return of the assets to inventory after their transformation so that the transformed assets are available for planning and reservations.

  9. Save your changes.
Here are some points related to single or multiple asset transformation:
  • The File-Based Data Import (FBDI) file, Maintenance Work Order Import, supports the creation of a transform work order.
  • After the assets are transformed, associate them to an asset-tracked and serial-controlled item.
  • If an asset is IoT-enabled prior to transformation, it can't be synced with IoT after transformation.
  • Update any existing forecasts after the asset is transformed.
  • Other work orders for the same asset can’t be released while a transform work order is in progress.
  • You can only reverse the latest transform work order.
  • Two transform work orders on the same asset can't be in progress simultaneously.
  • Asset transformation is optional at the time of completion, even for a transform work order.
  • The serial number used during transformation needs to be valid for its uniqueness and status.
