How You Use Matrix Management with Performance Evaluations

Matrix management functionality in Performance Management allows managers other than the employee's line manager to evaluate the employee, and view submitted ratings and comments.

Matrix Manager's Role

A matrix manager is an additional manager other than the line manager (for example, a project manager, a team manager, or a functional manager).

In a performance evaluation, matrix managers are participants with a specific, configured performance role that gives them the added ability to view ratings and comments submitted by others. To create a performance role, use the Performance Roles task in the Setup and Maintenance work area or on the administrator's Performance page.

Actions Matrix Managers Can Do

Matrix managers can access the performance documents that they need to evaluate in the Participant Feedback for Others section of their Performance page.

During a performance evaluation, matrix managers can do these actions:

  • Evaluate the employee by providing ratings and comments

  • Review the submitted ratings, comments, and questionnaire responses provided by the employee, other managers, and other participants

Note that matrix managers can only provide and view ratings and comments in sections to which they're granted access in the performance template. They can't add or remove content items, such as competencies or goals, from a performance document.

Matrix Manager's Notification

When an employee submits a completed self-evaluation, matrix managers receive a notification, if the Worker completes self-evaluation notification option is enabled. You use the Talent Notifications task in the Setup and Maintenance work area or the administrator's Performance page to set up the Performance Management notifications. You can also set up the notifications by navigating to My Client Groups > Performance > Setup > Talent Notifications > Performance Management tab.

Matrix Manager as Review Participants

Line managers and employees can add matrix managers as review participants to any performance document that they have access to.

  1. Open the Performance page of the employee.

  2. Select the review period of the performance document.

  3. From the Actions menu of the performance document, select Manage Participant Feedback.

  4. Click Add in the Participants section of the Manage Participant Feedback page.

    You can see the matrix managers of the employee in the Matrix Managers section, if enabled, or when you search for them.

  5. Select the matrix managers and click Send Request.

    Note: Matrix managers can view the ratings and comments provided by the employee, performance document manager, and other participants only if they're assigned a participant role for which the Allow role to view worker and manager evaluations check box is selected for their assigned participant role on the Performance Roles page.

Line managers can also remove matrix managers from the Manage Participant Feedback page, even if they were automatically assigned.
