Shipment Management

Equipment Manager

Equipment Manager allows you to create and modify equipment-related information as part of the Shipment Planning process. Additionally, Equipment Manager enables you to define compatibilities between equipment and ship units, to define other attributes such as temperature controls, and to assign equipment-related information to orders, locations, rates, and itineraries for planning and optimization.

Through task-oriented pages, you can create:

  • Equipment: Equipment represents any mode or method of storage or transport used for the movement of a shipment from one location to another. Accurate equipment information is critical to the shipment planning process, and equipment IDs are used to create equipment types that are used in capacity planning.
  • Equipment Type: Equipment types are used to define the characteristics of an equipment group. Using Intermodal Trailers as an example of an equipment group profile, the group in that profile could be 45' or 48' trailers. The equipment type against that group would be either a rollup or swing door trailer. Use the Equipment Type page to specify the characteristics of the equipment type. Equipment types are used to determine capacity information for a service provider, since capacity information can be critical in the shipment planning process.
  • Note: Equipment types are used in Capacity Management to create capacity limits for service providers.

  • Equipment Group: Equipment groups identify the kinds of equipment (such as dry vans, flatbed trucks, container cars, hoppers, tankers, box cars, etc.) that are used to transport shipments from one destination to another.
  • Vehicle Type: Vehicle types contain door height and width dimensions that must be added to the equipment group so that ship units assigned to that equipment group can fit through the door when they are loaded.
  • Temperature Control: Temperature control data lets you define specific temperature settings that equipment can provide during transportation. The temperature control is assigned to an equipment group that describes specific equipment such as refrigerated trucks that can be used to transport perishable goods.

  • Equipment Group Profile: An equipment group profile is a collection of equipment groups and is used to assist you in categorizing equipment groups by some common attribute or grouping scheme.
  • Equipment Group Profile Set: An equipment group profile set is a collection of equipment group profiles and is used to assist you in categorizing equipment group profiles by some common attribute or grouping scheme.

Note: The following interdependencies exist among the Equipment Manager sections:

An Equipment Group cannot be created without first creating one or more Equipment Types.
An Equipment Group Profile cannot be created without one or more Equipment Groups.
An Equipment Group Profile Set cannot be create without one or more Equipment Group Profiles.
