Packaging Reference Unit

This page is accessed via Order Management > Power Data > General > Packaging Reference Unit.

You can create mixed pallets based on the number of packaging reference units.

In some industries, there are standards applied to building mixed pallets. This helps combine boxes to form nice, neat pallets. In this case, all boxes are some multiple of this base box size and all standard sized pallets can fit a known number of these boxes. For example, if the base box size is 30 x 30 x 60 cm, then other boxes that can be loaded with it on a mixed pallet are some multiple of this size, such as 30 x 30 x 60 (1 unit), 30 x 30 x 120 box (2 units), or 60 x 60 x 60 box (4 units).

When Oracle Transportation Management determines what should be on a mixed pallet, not all packaging units may have a Packaging Reference Unit defined. In that case, Oracle Transportation Management puts all lines that have a Packaging Reference Unit on a mixed pallet first.

Defining a Packaging Reference Unit

  1. Enter a unique identifier in the Packaging Reference Unit ID field.
  2. Select the domain in which this packaging reference unit will be used from the Domain Name drop-down list.
  3. Enter the unit's name in the Name field.
  4. If desired, enter a description in the Description field.
  5. Select the Grouping Rule. This determines how to group items when consuming this packaging reference unit's capacity.

A packaging reference unit with the SAME grouping rule can be attached to both a transport handling unit or a transport handling unit at a certain location, to limit the number of different types of package items allowed on that transport handling unit, or that transport handling unit going into that location. "Same" items are items with the same packaged item ID.

A packaging reference unit with the LIKE grouping rule can be attached to both a transport handling unit or a transport handling unit at a certain location Doing so limits the number of LIKE items allowed on that transport handling unit, or transport handling unit when going into that location. "Like" items are items with the same packaged item type and the same packaging unit or if there is no packaging unit defined.
  6. Select an Application Rule. This field is not available if you have specified a grouping rule. Your choices are as follows:
    • Mixed: Items with different packaged items and differing packaging units. This application rule will be used if the items do not meet the criteria for the Like rule or the Same rule as detailed below.
    • Same: Packaged items that are identical and have identical packaged item IDs.
    • Like: Items which are not identical but occupying the same packaging unit. While the packaged item IDs can differ, the packaged item type ID must be identical.
    • Null: If no selection is made, the PRU (Packaging reference unit) should apply to all types of item mix - same, like or mixed. An example of when using "Null" works is for a rule around value of goods and the rule applies to any mix of goods on each pallet. The rule might be: pallets must contain less than 10,000 of value. Each order line has a PRU value assigned to it when coming into OTM. When building the pallet, OTM applies the 10,000 limit to both pallets with same product and mixed product. If the application rule instead is Mixed, the rule only applies to pallet with mixed products on it.
    • Note: If you do not get the result you expect, you may need to change the application rule. For example, you have two different items and you selected the application rule of 'Mixed'. However, the items are very similar. They may use the same package unit, for example 'Cases' and the same packaged item type, such as 'Stacked'. In this case, you should use the application rule of 'Like' or leave it null (meaning it will apply to Same, Like and Mixed) in order for the package reference unit capacity to be honored.
