Shipment Management

Equipment Type

This page is accessed via Shipment Management > Equipment Management > Equipment Type.

Equipment Types are used to define the characteristics of an equipment group. Using Intermodal Trailers as an example of an equipment group profile, the group in that profile could be 45' or 48' trailers. The equipment type against that group would be either a rollup or swing door trailer. Use this page to specify the characteristics of the equipment type.

Equipment types are used to determine capacity information for a service provider. Capacity information can be critical in the shipment planning process.

Note: There must be a 1 to 1 relationship between equipment groups and equipment types when defining them for rail transactions.

Creating an Equipment Type

  1. Enter the Equipment Type ID. This is the identifier for a category of equipment that shares particular qualities with that equipment group.
  2. You can also enter the Equipment Type Name, which is often the same as the Equipment Type ID.
  3. The Equipment Desc is a detailed description of the equipment type (e.g., 20 foot reefer, 40 foot dry van) that can be the same as the equipment type name. Enter the description to provide a further level of detail for the equipment type.
  4. The Equipment Desc Code is a user-defined code for the equipment type description (EDI element 40).
  5. The Equipment Desc Code Def is a definition of the equipment type description code.
  6. Enter the ISO Equipment Code. This is the official International Standards Organization (ISO) code for the container that may be used with this equipment type (EDI element 24). This code identifies the size and type of container in a four-character format. The first and second characters specify the volume of the container, and the third and fourth characters specify the type. This code may or may not be the same as the equipment description code.
  7. The ISO Equipment Code Def is an explanation of the ISO equipment code.
  8. Enter the Max Gross Weight for this equipment type, which is the maximum weight of a shipment including containers and packaging material.
  9. The Tare Weight is the actual weight of the equipment type.
  10. The Nominal Weight is the anticipated weight capacity of the shipment that can be contained within the equipment type.
  11. Enter the Interior Volume of the equipment type. This is the measured storage capacity of the equipment (e.g., 400 cubic feet). Click the icon to calculate volume by entering length, width, and height.
  12. The Metric 1 field represents an additional level of detail for a shipment on a given equipment type. For example, you can enter information about items being transported without packaging, such as a number of garments not packed into crates or onto pallets but instead placed on hangers. This number must be no greater than eight digits.
  13. The Metric 2 field represents an additional level of detail based on the value of the Metric 1 field. Based on the above example, where Metric 1 shows the number of garments, you could enter the number of hangers. This number must be no greater than eight digits.
  14. Enter the Interior Length, Interior Width, and Interior Height of the storage area for the equipment type.
  15. Enter the Exterior Length, Exterior Width, and Exterior Height of the storage area for the equipment type.
  16. Select the Temperature Control check box to enable temperature control to be used for this equipment type.
  17. If you use Temperature Control for your equipment type, find or create a Temperature Control ID. This is the unique ID that defines the temperature control.
  18. Use the Tag 1, Tag 2, Tag 3, and Tag 4 fields as needed to define particular tracking information that Oracle Transportation Management does not normally include with order release or shipment information.
  19. The Equipment Type Profile ID field indicates a substitutable equipment type profile. See Planning Equipment Type Scenarios for examples of how this impacts equipment. If equipment type can be substituted, it means that you can bring in one type of equipment, drop it off and leave with another.

Associate Equipment Group with Equipment Type

Enter an Equipment Group ID to associate with the equipment type. By doing so, you can associate the equipment type (e.g., dry van) with an equipment group (e.g., 48 foot equipment group), to create a new equipment group (e.g., a 48 foot dry van equipment group)
