Creating a Multistop Order

The system can accept order releases that define more than one pickup and more than one delivery stop. The Order Release With Stop manager is specifically for entry of multi-stop orders.

Limitations

  • No consolidation can happen with multistop orders
  • If using a multistop itinerary, all pickups are on the first leg and all dropoffs at last leg.
  • Multistop shipments from a multistop order cannot use 'Consolidate Shipment' and 'Split Shipment' actions.

Parameters

When planning a multi-stop order, OTM disregards your settings for these parameters and instead uses the values below:

Itineraries

You need to check certain settings on your itineraries to make them work with multi-stop order releases.

For single leg itineraries, you need to mark the Pool-Crossdock Itinerary check box on the itinerary header.  In addition, on all the itinerary legs, you need to set the Auto Consolidation Type to “No Auto Consolidate” and the Equipment Assignment Type to “Optimize Equipment”.

For multi-leg itineraries, you need to clear the Pool-Crossdock Itinerary check box on the itinerary header.  In addition, you need to set the Auto Consolidation Type field and Equipment Assignment Type field on the legs tab as follows:

  • On the first and last leg of the itinerary, set the Auto Consolidation Type to “Multistop into One Equip”.
  • On the remaining legs, set the Auto Consolidation Type to “Consol into One Equip”.
  • All legs on the itinerary must have the Equipment Assignment Type set to “Optimize Equipment”.

Creating a Multistop Order Release

  1. Go to the Order Release with Stops page (accessed via Order Management > Order Release > Order Release with Stops).
    1. Define the first pickup (source) location and last delivery (destination) location.
    2. You can mark the pickup and delivery times as appointments. This makes the early pickup or early delivery time on the order into an appointment on the corresponding shipment stop. This means that you can use this new manager to quickly enter a direct order as well as a multi-stop order.
    3. For a multi-stop order, you must select the Order Configuration as Ship Unit based order configuration. That’s because OTM only associates ship units, not line items, with stops.
  2. Go to the Order Stops tab in the Order Release With Stops manager where you can create a new stop for the order release.

Note: One exception to this is for interim stops, such as border crossings or weigh stations. These kinds of stops do not have pickups or deliveries. Since your stop will not have any ship units associated with, you have no place to define what will occur at this stop. Instead, for these kind of stops, use a special service on the itinerary to define this other activity. For example, you designate a stop as a border crossing using a special service containing an activity type set to BORDERCROSS.
If you also need your order with interim stops to plan on a multi-leg itinerary, you need to define the Leg Position. Think of a three leg itinerary with legs for dray - rail - dray. The Leg Position allows you to determine if this interim stop should occur on the first or last leg of the multi-leg itinerary. OTM puts pickup stops on the first leg and delivery stops on the last leg. OTM marks stops without a ship unit with an O for “other” rather than P (pickup) or D (delivery).

    1. Enter a Stop Seq(uence). The stop sequence can be any integer you want. The stop sequence should be sequential in the order in which the stops will occur. You can leave gaps in your sequence to allow for later additions. For example, if you have 3 stops, you can use a stop sequence of 10, 20, and 30. Then later, you can add an interim stop such as stop sequence 15. This stop would occur between stops 10 and 20. You only define the stop, not what will occur at this stop. You define what will occur at the stop on the Ship Unit tab.
    2. The Appointment check boxes are informational only but allow you to track what stops require or have appointments.
    3. You can enter Special Services. A special service you enter here is specific to this stop only.
  3. Go to the Ship Unit tab. You can specify where each ship unit is to be picked up or delivered. If, you leave the Pick Up Stop ID and Drop Off Stop ID empty, OTM assumes this ship unit is to be picked up and delivered at the stops you defined on the first tab of the order release manager. That is the first stop (source location) and the last stop (destination location) of the order release.
  4. Go to the Other Attributes tab. For Special Services, you can specify a Default for Source/Dest on the Special Services Manager.
