Name of Product: Oracle ATG Web Commerce Mobile Reference Store 10.1

Last Updated: 15-Dec-2011

This VPAT applies to only version 10.1.x. It does not apply to any versions of Oracle Commerce Mobile Reference Store after this.
This VPAT has been superseded by Oracle Commerce Mobile Reference Store 11.0

The Oracle ATG Web Commerce Mobile Reference Store (CRS-M) is a mobile browser-specific version of the existing Oracle ATG Web Commerce Reference Store (CRS) application.  The CRS application is distributed as sample code for commerce developers, and it is not sold separately.  CRS-M is essentially an extension of CRS which provides the new mobile browser-specific UI, and is distributed with CRS.  Therefore it is also sample code and is not sold separately either.

This VPAT summarizes the accessibility of the CRS-M UI, when rendered in Mobile Safari on the iPhone, and using the iPhone's built-in AT, VoiceOver.  Note that this is not a native iOS app, it is an HTML application that is customized to work with the iPhone's built in web browser. This VPAT specifically applies to the CRS-M product at version 10.1.

Specific issues that were encountered during accessibility testing are:

  • VoiceOver was not aware of/did not read pieces of a page that are dynamically updated by JavaScript.  These include JavaScript-generated widgets that pop up to inform the user of available actions, JavaScript-modified button text and JavaScript-expanded divs. We tested this using the "aria-live" global property. The workaround is to reread the page by dragging three fingers downward.
This VPAT does not cover the following product areas:

This tool is used as sample code and a training tool for commerce developers.  It's UI is a sample e-commerce mobile website, as would be rendered in the browser of a mobile device.  In this intial VPAT we will be describing the UI of the sample website as it if were used as a true production site.

Accessibility tools are enabled in the iPhone's settings, instructions are available at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3577

The information below describes this product's ability to support the applicable U.S. Section 508 standards and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 Double-A Guidelines, subject to Oracle's interpretation of those standards and the remarks in this document.

Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Mobile Safari does not allow navigation using a connected keyboard without VoiceOver enabled.  We have tested that focus moves logically using VoiceOver, and that UI elements can be selected when using VoiceOver.

The horizontal sliders on the homepage only scroll in response to a user's swipe. The content in the homepage horizontal scrolling display is accessible to to all users through browsing or searching the site.

The CRS-M website was tested for the following abilities when VoiceOver is enabled:
  • ability to perform functions through double-tap anywhere on the screen, or from a connected Bluetooth keyboard
  • logical movement of focus through the controls through left and right swipe movements anywhere on the screen, or from a connected Bluetooth keyboard with the left and right arrow keys
1194.21(b) Applications shall not disrupt or disable activated features of other products that are identified as accessibility features, where those features are developed and documented according to industry standards. Applications also shall not disrupt or disable activated features of any operating system that are identified as accessibility features where the application programming interface for those accessibility features has been documented by the manufacturer of the operating system and is available to the product developer. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for response to the following operating system accessibility features:

  • VoiceOver
  • Zoom
  • White on Black
  • Speak Selection
1194.21(c) A well-defined on-screen indication of the current focus shall be provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that assistive technology can track focus and focus changes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for:

  • Visual indication of the focused component when used with VoiceOver
  • Visual indication of the position of the cursor in editable text fields
  • Current focus location and position of the caret in text is programmatically exposed.

1194.21(d) Sufficient information about a user interface element including the identity, operation and state of the element shall be available to assistive technology. When an image represents a program element, the information conveyed by the image must also be available in text. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for:
  • Controls have a programmatically associated name, derived from the appropriate HTML elements and attributes including LABEL, TITLE, SUMMARY, CAPTION, etc.
  • Additional state information is programmatically exposed, such as whether a field is ‘required’.
  • Images that convey information have meaningful alternative text.

1194.21(e) When bitmap images are used to identify controls, status indicators, or other programmatic elements, the meaning assigned to those images shall be consistent throughout an application's performance. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Functional images are marked up with alternative text. We tested this using the VoiceOver functionality.

1194.21(f) Textual information shall be provided through operating system functions for displaying text. The minimum information that shall be made available is text content, text input caret location, and text attributes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for:
  • Text is rendered through the platform controls which are responsible for exposing content in a way that is programmatically available to assistive technology on the platform.
1194.21(g) Applications shall not override user selected contrast and color selections and other individual display attributes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

We verified that the "White on Black" option in the iPhone's Accessibility settings was honored by the application.

1194.21(h) When animation is displayed, the information shall be displayable in at least one non-animated presentation mode at the option of the user. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Decorative content such as background images are added using CSS, and does not activate Voice Over.

1194.21(i) Color coding shall not be used as the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for:

  • Information conveyed by color or font styles is available in alternative formats, such as shape and text.

Section 1194.22 Web-based Internet Information and Applications

Criteria
Supporting Features
Remarks (e.g., definition, equivalent facilitation, scope of support provided)
1194.22(a) A text equivalent for every non-text element shall be provided (e.g., via "alt", "longdesc", or in element content). Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Functional images have meaningful ALT text, this was verified with VoiceOver.

Decorative images are displayed using CSS and not read by VoiceOver.

There are no complex images that require a LONGDESC - the only complex images that we have, have text overlaid on them which is read by VoiceOver - e.g. the homepage promotional content images each have a picture with a piece of text overlaid on them.  VoiceOver reads this text correctly.

There are no data tables in this application.

Pages were tested for meaningful titles.

There are no applets in this application.

1194.22(b) Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation shall be synchronized with the presentation. Not Applicable

There is no video in this application's UI.

There is no prerecorded synchronized media.

1194.22(c) Web pages shall be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color, for example from context or markup. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for:

  • Information conveyed by color or font styles is available in alternative formats, such as shape and text.
1194.22(d) Documents shall be organized so they are readable without requiring an associated style sheet. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Style sheets are used only to change the layout and presentation of the screen. The CSS overrides the default appearance of HTML buttons in Mobile Safari, however those buttons are coded in HTML as buttons and they are read as such by VoiceOver.

1194.22(e) Redundant text links shall be provided for each active region of a server-side image map. Not Applicable

There are no server-side image maps used in this application

1194.22(f) Client-side image maps shall be provided instead of server-side image maps except where the regions cannot be defined with an available geometric shape. Not Applicable

There are no client-side image maps used in this application.

1194.22(g) Row and column headers shall be identified for data tables. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

There are no data tables in this application, and we use mostly lists for layout with only a couple of exceptions.  In the layout tables that we do use, there are no TH elements.

1194.22(h) Markup shall be used to associate data cells and header cells for data tables that have two or more logical levels of row or column headers. Not Applicable

There are no data tables in this application's UI.

1194.22(i) Frames shall be titled with text that facilitates frame identification and navigation. Not Applicable

There are no frames or iframes in this application's UI.

1194.22(j) Pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz. Not Applicable

There are no flickering or flashing UI elements in this application.

1194.22(k) A text-only page, with equivalent information or functionality, shall be provided to make a web site comply with the provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The homepage of the application has 2 parallel horizontal scrollers, implemented in JavaScript, that are operated by the non-VoiceOver user swiping them.  While VoiceOver reads the content that is on the page, it does not allow the VoiceOver user to scroll to the right or left to access more content.  However, there is an alternate means to accomplish the task of viewing these products by searching for them using the search functionality (the search bar in the header).

1194.22(l) When pages utilize scripting languages to display content, or to create interface elements, the information provided by the script shall be identified with functional text that can be read by assistive technology. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The system was tested using VoiceOver. All of the user tasks were successful. One issue was identified:

  • The user is not alerted when button text changes  - for example they don't receive confirmation they have successfully added a product to their shopping cart or updated the shopping cart. However the operation does succeed and the reader can read the new text using the voiceover. Bug #13339354 covers this issue.
1194.22(m) When a web page requires that an applet, plug-in or other application be present on the client system to interpret page content, the page must provide a link to a plug-in or applet that complies with §1194.21(a) through (l). Not Applicable

This application's UI does not require any plug-ins or applications.

Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Form elements have meaningful labels associated with them.  These were tested with VoiceOver.

1194.22(o) A method shall be provided that permits users to skip repetitive navigation links. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

There is not a link to skip the navigation elements and move to the main content of the page.  In the mobile version of the site there are only four elements in the navigation: store logo (link to home screen), search box (text input for entering search criteria), shopping cart icon (link) and profile icon (link).

Structure and hierarchy of the page content is marked up with Header elements.

1194.22(p) When a timed response is required, the user shall be alerted and given sufficient time to indicate more time is required. Not Applicable

There is no periodically & automatically updated content on this application's UI. Users are not logged out after a period of inactivity.

Note to 1194.22: The Board interprets paragraphs (a) through (k) of this section as consistent with the following priority 1 Checkpoints of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0) (May 5 1999) published by the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium: Paragraph (a) - 1.1, (b) - 1.4, (c) - 2.1, (d) - 6.1, (e) - 1.2, (f) - 9.1, (g) - 5.1, (h) - 5.2, (i) - 12.1, (j) - 7.1, (k) - 11.4.
