The Atlanta Data Center has the following components:

• Oracle RAC Database, which can communicate with the Oracle RAC Database in the Berkeley Data Center
• A Standby database, which can communicate with the standby in the Berkeley Data Center
• The standby communicates directly with the Atlanta A Read-Only Node, which in turn communicates with the Atlanta B Read-Write Node. The Atlanta Read-Write node directly communicates with the Atlanta C Read-Write Node.
• The Oracle RAC Database communicates with Atlanta B Read-Write Node, which in turn communicates with the following items in the Berkeley Data Center: Berkeley B Read-Write Node, which communicates with Berkeley A Read-Only Node. The Berkeley A Read-Only node communicates directly with the Oracle RAC Database in Berkeley. Hence, the Atlanta Data Center's Oracle RAC Database communicates with the Berkeley Data Center's Oracle RAC Database, through the Oracle Key Vault nodes.
• In the Atlanta Data Center, a database communicates directly with the Atlanta C Read-Write Node, which in turn communicates with the Berkeley Data Center: first, to the Berkeley C Read-Write Node, which communicates to a database in Berkeley.

The Berkeley Data Center has these components:

• The Standby and Oracle RAC Database, which communicate with their equivalents in Atlanta.
• From the Oracle RAC Database, the Berkeley A Read-Only Node, which communicates with the Berkeley B Read-Write Node.
• The standby communicates directly with the Berkeley B Read-Write Node, which in turn communicates with Berkeley C Read-Write Node. This node communicates directly with the Berkeley database and with the Atlanta C Read-Write Node.
• The Berkeley B Read-Write node also communicates with the Berkeley A Read-Only Node.

For both Atlanta and Berkeley, the connections between the following nodes are synchronous, which means that there is a period of time between the occurrence of a transaction between the two connecting nodes:

• Atlanta A Read-Only Node, to Atlanta B Read-Write Node, to Atlanta C Read-Write Node
• Berkeley A Read-Only Node, to Berkeley B Read-Only Node, to Berkeley C Read-Only Node

For both Atlanta and Berkeley, the connections between the following nodes are synchronous, which means that the transactions occur immediately between the two connecting nodes:

• Atlanta B Read-Write Node to Berkeley B Read-Write Node
• Atlanta C Read-Write Node to Berkeley C Read-Write Node

For all connections throughout both data centers, data is bi-directional.
