Installing Oracle Instant Client
About Oracle Instant Client
Oracle Instant Client provides the libraries and client-side components required for applications and tools to connect to local or remote Oracle AI Database systems without installing a full Oracle home. It supports Linux x86-64 and Arm platforms, OCI, OCCI, ODBC, JDBC OCI, and language APIs, and is distributed as ZIP files or RPMs. Packages include Basic, Basic Light, SDK, SQL*Plus, Tools, ODBC, Precompilers, and JDBC-OCI supplements; utilities include genezi and adrci. It supports FIPS 140-2, standard client-server version interoperability, and simplified, space-efficient deployment, while the JDBC-OCI driver is deprecated in Oracle AI Database 26ai.

Operating System Requirements for x86-64 Linux Platforms
Oracle Instant Client on Linux x86-64 requires supported kernels and current dependency packages for Oracle Linux 10, Oracle Linux 9, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. Minimum supported versions include Oracle Linux 10 kernels 6.12.0-104.43.4.2.el10uek or 6.12.0-55.40.1.0.1.el10_0 with the Red Hat Compatible Kernel, Oracle Linux 9.6 with UEK 8 kernel 6.12.0-1.23.3.2.el9uek, and RHEL 10 kernel 6.12.0-55.40.1.0.1.el10_0. Required packages include core system libraries, development tools, networking, X11, security, and monitoring components; the oracle-ai-database-preinstall-26ai RPM can install them and perform system configuration.

Operating System Requirements for Linux for Arm (aarch64)
Oracle Instant Client on Linux Arm requires supported Oracle Linux distributions, kernels, and dependency packages. Oracle Linux 9 requires version 9.4 or later with UEK 7 kernel 5.15.0-307.178.5.el9uek, while Oracle Linux 8 requires version 8.6 or later with UEK 7 kernel 5.15.0-205.149.5.1.el8uek. Required packages include compilers, glibc, asynchronous I/O, networking, security, X11, and system utilities; the oracle-ai-database-preinstall-26ai RPM can install the dependencies and perform related system configuration. Oracle recommends using the latest available release levels.

Verifying Oracle Instant Client Code Signing
Oracle Instant Client ZIP and RPM packages can be signature-verified before deployment. Use Java jarsigner with the verify option, optionally including verbose certificate details, to validate ZIP files. For RPMs, inspect package signatures and key fingerprints with rpm -qip, confirm package signatures with rpm --checksig --verbose, and ensure the expected GPG key is installed or imported when required. Successful verification reports valid signature and digest statuses, while NOKEY indicates that the signing key is not installed even though the signature can still be identified.

Installing Oracle Instant Client Packages
Oracle Instant Client can be installed from ZIP files or RPM packages on Linux x86-64 and Arm platforms, with Basic or Basic Light required for every installation. ZIP installation involves extracting packages into one directory, installing libaio, configuring the dynamic linker or LD_LIBRARY_PATH, placing Oracle Net files in network/admin or an alternative TNS_ADMIN directory, and updating PATH for tools. RPM installation supports repository-based or manually downloaded packages through dnf; only one RPM version is normally installed at a time, earlier versions should be removed first, and versionlock can help prevent unintended upgrades. The full-client Setup Wizard no longer installs Instant Client beginning with Oracle Database 26ai.

Installing Oracle Instant Client Basic Light
Oracle Instant Client Basic Light is a smaller alternative to Basic that contains English client error messages, a limited set of common character sets, and monolingual collations. It supports specified single-byte, multibyte, and Unicode character sets but rejects unsupported client or database character sets and multilingual or Unicode NLS_SORT collations such as suffix _M and prefix UCA values. NLS_LANG language and territory settings remain broadly supported, although client-generated errors are always in English. Install it using the standard ZIP or RPM procedures with basiclite packages; other packages such as SQL*Plus require the Basic package.

Instant Client Libraries for OCI
The Basic and Basic Light packages provide the shared libraries required for OCI applications, including client code, OCI data, security, legacy algorithm, HSM or smartcard, and FIPS provider libraries. Basic uses libociei.so for OCI data, while Basic Light uses libociicus.so. All required libraries must remain in the same directory, and only one Oracle client library directory should be active in the operating system search path. Applications must not simultaneously expose an Oracle home library directory and an Instant Client directory; optional Oracle configuration files belong in network/admin or a directory specified by TNS_ADMIN. Instant Client supports client-side OCI operations but not server-side external procedures.

Environment Variables for Oracle Instant Client
Key environment variables control library loading, globalization, configuration-file discovery, time zone data, session time zones, and OCI error behavior. LD_LIBRARY_PATH can expose ZIP-installed libraries when ldconfig is not used, but should generally not be set for RPM installations; NLS_LANG controls client language, territory, and character set; TNS_ADMIN identifies nondefault Oracle Net configuration files; ORA_TZFILE selects an external time zone file; ORA_SDTZ sets the default session time zone; and ORA_SUPPRESS_ERROR_URL disables OCI error help URLs. ORACLE_HOME must not be set for Instant Client installations.

Setting the Time Zone Environment Variable
ORA_TZFILE allows Oracle Instant Client to use a selected time zone file instead of the larger embedded default. Set it to a file name located in the Instant Client or oracore/zoneinfo directory, or to an absolute path elsewhere, and use genezi -v to inspect client time zone information. The client and database should use matching time zone file versions to avoid errors such as ORA-1805 when processing timestamp-with-time-zone data; the database version can be queried from V$TIMEZONE_FILE.

About the Oracle Instant Client SDK
The Oracle Instant Client SDK supplies development resources for OCI and OCCI applications on supported Oracle Linux x86-64 and Arm platforms, distributed as devel RPMs or SDK ZIP files. It includes C and C++ headers, build makefiles, demonstration programs, and the Object Type Translator and related classes. On Linux, demo.mk supports building examples, provided the Instant Client directory is available through the runtime library search path and LD_LIBRARY_PATH is configured as needed during linking.

Patching Oracle Instant Client Shared Libraries
To patch Instant Client, apply the patch to a full Oracle Database Client Administrator installation with OPatch, regenerate the OCI data libraries and required ZIP or RPM packages, and deploy the generated artifacts to the target Instant Client directory. The regenerated files contain only components, language resources, character sets, and time zone data present in the source Oracle home. The libclntsh.so library retains patch information viewable with genezi -v. Regeneration requires suitable compiler, linker, and rpm-build tools, uses make targets for all or individual packages, and is unavailable on Microsoft Windows.
