Response Files

Reasons for Using Silent Mode or Response File Mode

Silent mode supports unattended, scheduled, repeatable, and non-GUI installations, displaying only progress in the initiating terminal. Response file mode supports similar installations across multiple systems while allowing default answers for some or all installer prompts.

Using Response Files

Response files enable Oracle products to be installed and configured in silent or response file mode. After completing all prerequisites, prepare the response file, run the installer, execute required root scripts, and, for software-only installations, run Net Configuration Assistant and Oracle DBCA to configure the listener and database.

Preparing Response Files

Oracle supplies product-specific response file templates in the Oracle home response directories, including templates for database installation, DBCA, NETCA, and Grid Infrastructure. Copy and edit the appropriate template, retain the .rsp suffix, follow its instructions precisely, and secure it with permission mode 600 because it may contain plain-text passwords. Response files can also be recorded from OUI’s interactive Summary page, but passwords are not saved; review and update recorded files before reuse on other systems.

Running Oracle Universal Installer Using a Response File

Run runInstaller for Oracle AI Database or gridSetup.sh for Grid Infrastructure with the full path to the configured response file, optionally adding -silent; use -help to view available options. Complete prerequisites, log in as the software owner, set DISPLAY only for response file mode, and avoid relative response-file paths. During installation, run orainstRoot.sh as root when prompted for the first Oracle installation and run the Oracle home’s root.sh after installation completes.

Running Configuration Assistants Using Response Files

Configuration assistants can run noninteractively using copied and edited response file templates. OUI uses supplied values for silent or partially automated installation, with silent mode suppressing screens and response file mode displaying unresolved prompts. DBCA uses dbca.rsp with -responseFile and requires DISPLAY, while NETCA uses netca.rsp with the -silent and -responsefile options; both require the correct Oracle home, complete and valid response files, and full file paths.
