Understanding the Lakehouse Architecture

Oracle AI Database participates in a lakehouse without taking ownership of every external asset. The authoritative catalog continues to own table metadata, and the object store continues to own the physical files. Oracle AI Database supplies SQL access, local authorization, optimization, and optional caching or materialization where supported.

Distinguish Data Ownership and Product Boundaries

Do not infer data ownership or feature support from SQL syntax alone. The following distinctions apply throughout this guide.

Concept Meaning in this Guide Boundary
Externally managed lake data The source catalog owns table metadata and the object store owns the referenced files. Oracle Database can query the data in place through a documented access path. External data does not become database-managed merely because Oracle SQL can query it.
Oracle-managed data Database tables, views, indexes, constraints, and data loaded or materialized into Oracle Database are managed by the database. A loaded or materialized copy is a separate database-managed representation of the external source.
Lake Cache A persistent local cache can retain eligible external table data in database storage for repeated reads. Lake Cache is not source-of-record storage and does not replace source-catalog or object-store maintenance.
Lakehouse capabilities External tables, mounted catalogs, documented Iceberg access and write paths, Lake Cache, and Data Lake Accelerator where available. General SQL, database security, indexes, and optimizer features remain Oracle Database capabilities; this guide references them only when they affect a lakehouse path.
AI Lakehouse and lakehouse architecture AI Lakehouse is a specific Oracle deployment and product term. A lakehouse is an architecture that can span catalogs, object storage, and multiple query engines. Use the service documentation to establish AI Lakehouse capability availability; do not treat the product name as a general architecture definition.
