Graph Types

GraphRAG supports textual and non-textual graphs. Both represent entities and relationships extracted from source chunks. The graph type determines whether GraphRAG generates additional descriptions for those entities and relationships.

Textual Graph

A textual graph includes generated descriptions or summaries for graph components. It provides richer context but requires additional model processing.

Non-Textual Graph

A non-textual graph represents extracted entities and relationships without additional generated descriptions. For example, it retains the entity name Erik Erikson and the relationship label “written by,” while avoiding the model processing required to generate descriptions.
