10.2.3 Fast Data File Creation

Fast data file creation more than doubles the speed at which new data files are formatted. Instead of writing the newly formatted blocks to disk or flash, the flash cache just persists the metadata about the blocks in the write back flash cache, eliminating the actual formatting writes to disks. For example, creating a 1 TB data file on Oracle Exadata Full Rack running release 11.2.3.3 takes 90 seconds when using fast data file creation. Creating the same 1TB data file on earlier releases takes 220 seconds. This feature works automatically when write back flash cache is enabled, and the correct software releases are in use.

Minimum software: Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software release 11.2.3.3 running Oracle Database11g Release 2 (11.2) release 11.2.0.4, or Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1) release 12.1.0.1
