10 Hardware Components of the Exadata Storage Expansion Rack

Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack provides additional storage for Exadata Database Machine.

The additional storage can be used for backups, historical data, and unstructured data. Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Racks can be used to add space to Exadata Database Machine as follows:

  • Add new Oracle Exadata Storage Servers and grid disks to a new Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) disk group.

  • Extend existing disk groups by adding grid disks in Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack.

  • Split Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack among multiple Exadata Database Machines.

The following sections describe the components of Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Racks:

10.1 Components of Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack X9M-2

Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack X9M-2 includes the following components:

  • Storage: Between 4 and 19 Exadata Storage Servers X9M-2.

    A base Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack contains 4 High Capacity (HC) or 4 Extreme Flash (EF) storage servers. For a HC base rack, additional HC or Extended (XT) storage servers may be added to a total of 19 storage servers. For an EF base rack, additional EF or XT storage servers may be added to a total of 19 storage servers.

    Raw storage capacity:

    • With HC storage servers:
      • 4 HC storage servers: 864 TB of raw disk capacity and 102.4 TB of raw flash capacity.
      • 19 HC storage servers: 4104 TB of raw disk capacity and 486.4 TB of raw flash capacity.
    • With EF storage servers:
      • 4 EF storage servers: 204.8 TB of raw flash capacity.
      • 19 EF storage servers: 972.8 TB of raw flash capacity.
    • With XT storage servers: up to 3240 TB of raw disk capacity, in addition to either 4 HC or 4 EF storage servers.
  • RDMA Network Fabric: 3 x RoCE Network Fabric Switches

  • Power Distribution Units (PDUs): 2 x 15 kVA (single phase or three phase, high voltage or low voltage)

  • Network Connectivity: 1 x Management Network Switch

In the list above, raw capacity is expressed using standard disk drive terminology, with 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Usable capacity is less.

10.2 Components of Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack X8M-2

The Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack X8M-2 includes the following components:

  • At least 4 Exadata Storage Server X8M-2 servers with:

    • 6.4 TB Flash Accelerator F640 or F640v2 PCIe cards
    • (High Capacity (HC) Storage Servers only) 14 TB 7.2 K RPM High Capacity SAS disks
  • 3 x RoCE Network Fabric Switches
