This figure shows the lifecycle of test master and snapshot databases.

A production database points to a Data Guard Replica. Step 1 converts the Data Guard replica to a test master database. This step contains the following activities:

• Defer redo transport
• Optionally, convert the Data Guard replica to a snapshot standby
• Perform test master configuration tasks
• Close the database
• Optionally, open the database in read-only mode

Step 2 is create and use snapshots.

Step 3 is refresh test master database. This step contains the following activities:

• Drop all of the snapshots
• In step 1, if the Data Guard replica was converted to a snapshot standby, then convert it back to the original Data Guard configuration
• Refresh and resynchronize the Data Guard replica
• Start again at step 1
