Consolidate Drifted Databases Into A Oracle Home

Over time, several databases will find a need to apply emergency patches. This results in the databases that were previously sharing the same Oracle home to get moved into their own Oracle homes with these additional patches. These databases have now drifted from the published gold image and are called Drifters. For more information see: Emergency Patching.

When you need to patch these databases, new Oracle homes will be deployed for each of these databases resulting in an Oracle home sprawl. The recommended practice would be to get these databases back into the shared Oracle home as before.

To now update and bring back into drifters into their correct Oracle homes during your next update follow these steps:
  1. Create and publish a new image version with all patches required to consolidate the homes. For more information see: Create a Gold Image Using EMCLI.
  2. Update the gold images version status to CURRENT. For more information see: Changing Version Status to Current.
  3. Update the database to use the new version. For more information see: Update Databases Using Fleet Maintenance and Update Operations.
  4. Consolidate all databases back to the same new home as before. For more information see: Consolidate Oracle Homes.
