Exadata Monitoring and Management Features

Enterprise Manager enables the discovery of Exadata systems and their individual components as managed targets. Once discovered, administrators can leverage the following capabilities:

  • Monitor the overall health of Exadata systems and their components.
  • Detect and respond to hardware and software faults.
  • Analyze performance at the system, component, cluster, database, and host levels.
  • Monitor Exascale and ASM storage, including capacity and serviced clients.
  • Monitor and manage Exadata configuration, storage, network, and I/O settings.
  • Monitor database server virtualization, including KVM (KVM host, KVM guest) with RoCE network fabric, and Xen (dom0, domU) with InfiniBand network fabric.

In addition, Enterprise Manager provides comprehensive host, cluster, database, and related target monitoring and management capabilities for Exadata customers.

Monitoring and Notification Features

Enterprise Manager provides the following key monitoring and notification features for Exadata:

  • Exadata Database Machine Target Support: Supports an expanding range of Exadata Database Machine target types, hardware generations, and software feature releases, assuring administrators of continued, relevant support for monitoring and management capabilities. For a complete list of supported hardware, see Supported Hardware and Software Configurations for the Oracle Exadata Plug-in.
  • Target Monitoring: Monitors Exadata Database Machine and related hardware and software components as an integrated system of Enterprise Manager targets; collaborates across plug-ins to provide unified monitoring and notification for Exadata Database Machine targets.
  • Target Visualization: Provides detailed insight into Exadata Database Machine system health, configuration, and performance across hardware and software components, and surfaces key availability and health information from the Exadata fleet.
  • SNMP Notification Processing: Supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) notifications from Exadata Database Machine components. Raises hardware and software alerts with appropriate severity as Enterprise Manager events and incidents, enabling rapid notification of administrators about issues requiring attention through built-in notification mechanisms and integration with external systems such as ticketing and paging systems.
  • Hardware Monitoring: Leverages the Oracle Systems Infrastructure plug-in for hardware schematics and fault monitoring.
  • Event Compression: Provides tools to reduce noise from event and incident notification volume for related events, enabling administrators to focus on actionable issues.
  • IORM for Multitenant Databases: Provides CDB-level I/O workload summary with PDB-level breakdown, visualization of I/O utilization at the storage server level, and integration with the Database Resource Management administration UI.
  • Storage Server and Storage Server Grid Performance: Enables performance evaluation within and across multiple storage servers including flash and hard disk, flash cache, flash log, CPU, and workload distribution by databases.
  • SNMPv2 to SNMPv3 Conversion: Converts discovered Exadata component monitoring to leverage increased security of SNMPv3.
  • CellCLI to REST API Conversion: Converts discovered Exadata storage server monitoring to use the REST API in accordance with best practices and enhanced security.

Target Discovery Features

Enterprise Manager provides the following key target discovery features for Exadata:

  • Enterprise Manager Exadata Discovery Wizard: Simplifies the initial or additional component discovery of Exadata Database Machine and related targets. Enables selection of all or a subset of related components. In addition to the Exadata Database Machine target, the following additional component targets are also discovered:
    • Database servers
    • Storage servers and storage server grid
    • Leaf and spine fabric network switches (RoCE or InfiniBand)
    • Management network switches
    • Exascale cluster
    • Racks
    • Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
  • Command Line Discovery via EMCLI: Enables administrators to automate Exadata Database Machine and related target discovery, improving repeatability and consistency in monitoring configuration and reducing effort required at fleet scale.
  • Prerequisite Checks: Performs checks for critical configuration requirements and ensures the presence and readability of essential files such as databasemachine.xml or catalog.xml. These checks also prevent the rediscovery of already discovered targets.
  • Guided SNMP Configuration: Automates the setup of SNMP notifications for Exadata Database Machine components.
  • Automated Plug-in Deployment: During agent install, Systems Infrastructure and Exadata discovery plug-ins are automatically deployed. During the Exadata discovery process, the Systems Infrastructure and Exadata monitoring plug-ins are automatically deployed to the agent.
  • Credential Validation: Supports credential validation and the use of named credentials.
  • Custom Naming: Allows assigning custom names to Exadata Database Machine targets.
  • Flexible Network Discovery: Supports discovery using either the management network or the client network and compute nodes with client network host names.
  • Monitor Locked Storage Servers: Supports REST API-based discovery and monitoring of Exadata Storage Servers on which SSH is disabled.
  • Multi-rack Support: Facilitates initial discovery and addition of racks, providing side-by-side rack schematics.
  • Expansion Rack Support: Supports hardware with Storage Expansion Racks.
