Perform an out-of-place upgrade. Out-of-place upgrades allow you to perform the upgrade with less downtime and more stability, due to the non-destructive nature of the software installation.
You can perform the upgrade and maintain the existing Oracle home location by taking a backup of the prior release Oracle home before upgrading, and moving the prior release binaries to a different location before installing the new binaries into the existing Oracle home location.
