Location Considerations for Satellite and FirstNet Connectivity

Starlink-connected edge nodes and hardware that uses a FirstNet SIM can use different registration and deployment information.

The deployment location identifies where the hardware is physically installed. The registration address identifies the service or business location used to register the connectivity service.

For example, an edge node can be deployed offshore while its registration address identifies an onshore office or support location. In this case, Oracle ECP uses the deployment location for mapping and deployment tracking and uses the registration address for service registration.

For Starlink connectivity, Oracle ECP requires a registration address and registration coordinates. Oracle ECP derives the registration coordinates from the registration address. If Oracle ECP cannot geocode the registration address, onboarding cannot continue until you provide a valid address.

For FirstNet connectivity, the registration address must be in the United States. Oracle ECP attempts to derive registration coordinates from the address. If Oracle ECP cannot geocode the address, onboarding can continue without registration coordinates. The registration address remains required.

When Starlink-specific location requirements apply, Oracle ECP displays a warning banner in the location workflow.

When GPS location reporting is enabled for eligible hardware, GPS location identifies the latest reported position. GPS location remains separate from both deployment location and registration address.

Examples of Location Data Across Hardware Types

Different hardware types can use location information in different ways. These examples show how deployment location, registration address, and GPS location can vary depending on the hardware and connectivity scenario.

Table 8-2 Examples of Location Data Across Hardware Types

Hardware scenario Deployment location Registration address GPS location
Standard device or edge node at a fixed site Physical installation site used for mapping Not applicable unless Starlink or FirstNet connectivity requires a registration address. Not shown
Satellite-connected edge node at a remote or offshore site Physical installation site, such as a remote or offshore location Business or service address used for connectivity registration Not shown
Device or edge node with a FirstNet SIM Physical installation site used for mapping United States service or business address used for FirstNet registration Available only when supported by the hardware and existing GPS-location functionality
MDM-enabled device Physical deployment site used for deployment mapping Business or service address when required Current device position shown as a blue dot on the Location tab
