10 Out of Band ZTP

Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) for SD-WAN Edge allows factory default / newly added sites other than the NCN/Controller to be automatically upgraded with configuration using a USB drive for physical sites or mapped drive for virtual sites. The feature is supported on all hardware and virtual SD-WAN Edge appliances running release 9.1 or later.

The user will use existing Configuration Editor (CE) functionality to add a new site to the system. Using Full Network Change Management on the SD-WAN Edge NCN/Controller, the system is upgraded with this new configuration. After upgrade, the new site will be displayed in Change Management where a software installation package can be downloaded.

The user will follow the documented instructions for creating the USB with the specified label and moving the downloaded installation package to the root of the USB drive's file system. For remote locations, the USB drive will be sent with the physical appliance for installation on location. The user will first boot the appliance with no USB drive inserted. Once the appliance is fully up-and-running, the user will insert the USB drive into the physical appliance. The appliance detects and automatically mounts the labeled drive, and uses the software installation .zip file for upgrade and applies the system configuration. Once the conduit is up, the new site will be part of the SD-WAN Edge system.

The client/admin user needs to ensure the right USB, with packages, are sent to the sites. The software only validates and rejects:

  • incompatible platform packages, and
  • invalid packages.

If ZTP fails, the factory default appliance (no system configuration) will start up with the One-Touch Start page for configuration through the user interface. Once the appliance is configured, it will no longer mount the USB or mounted drive for upgrade on boot.
