Configuring Dynamic Protection Schemes
Understanding the Switch Protection Scheme Table
Protection schemes are configured in the PF_SWITCH_PROTECTION_SCHEME database table. This table allows an operator to configure a protection scheme that consists of a collection of source, their associated ground and phase protection limits, and the SCADA digital relay used to update the protection settings of the device in the field.
A protection device can be associated with a scheme through the PROTECTION_SCHEME column in the PF_SWITCHES database table.
Understanding SCADA Measurements in Protection Schemes
Several SCADA measurements are used on the protection device to allow the NMS system to change the protection scheme of the device.
Protection Scheme Enabled
This SCADA measurement defines whether dynamic protection schemes are enabled or disabled for the protection device. A value of Disabled (0) means NMS will not update the protection limits for the device. A value of Enabled (1) indicates that NMS will update the devices protection limits when the source feeding the device changes.
Note: The measurement name is configured by the Protection Scheme Enabled configuration rule in the Configuration Assistant; see Using the Event Management Rules Tab for information on setting rules (Administration users only).
Protection Scheme Relay 1 to Protection Scheme Relay 8
These SCADA measurements represent each of the eight digital relays used to control the protection scheme in the field. When NMS changes the protection scheme for a switch, a control is sent to the relevant digital relay to turn it on.
The name of the digital measurements are configured by the Protection Scheme Relay 1 through to Protection Scheme Relay 8 rules in the Configuration Assistant, Event Management Rules tab. See Using the Event Management Rules Tab for information about configuring rules.
Configuration Assistant, Event Management Rules
The Configuration Assistant, Event Management Rules contains several rules for configuring Protection Schemes in the NMS.
Rule Name
Description
Protection Scheme Enabled
Specifies the SCADA attribute name used to determine if dynamic protection schemes are enabled for a device or not.
Protection Scheme Relay 1
Specifies the SCADA attribute name used to identify the protection scheme digital relay 1.
Protection Scheme Relay 2
Specifies the SCADA attribute name used to identify the protection scheme digital relay 2.
Protection Scheme Relay 3
Specifies the SCADA attribute name used to identify the protection scheme digital relay 3.
Protection Scheme Relay 4

Protection Scheme Period
Specifies the period in minutes in which a background protection scheme analysis will be performed.
Protection Scheme Mode
A flag that indicates the dynamic Protection Schemes global status at system start up.
Protection Scheme Template Base
A template rule that defines the block control action key Protection Schemes uses to create switch plans.
Protection Scheme Template Disable
A template rule that defines the control action key Protection Schemes use to add Disable Protection Scheme Condition steps to a switching plan.
Protection Scheme Template Enable
A template rule that defines the control action key Protection Schemes use to add Enable Protection Scheme Condition steps to a switching plan.
Protection Scheme Quality Bitmask
Indicates the quality code whose presence on a scada digital relay indicates that the relay is inhibited and should not be used.
Protection Scheme Default Relay
The default digital relay to set to On if the NMS deems the protection scheme should be changed to a relay that has had an inhibit quality code applied to it.
Protection Scheme relay 1 action template
A template rule that defines the control action key that should be used to set digital relay 1 to On.
Protection Scheme relay 2 action template
A template rule that defines the control action key that should be used to set digital relay 2 to On.
Protection Scheme relay 3 action template
A template rule that defines the control action key that should be used to set digital relay 3 to On.
Protection Scheme relay 4 action template
A template rule that defines the control action key that should be used to set digital relay 4 to On.
