Exempting Tax

Tax exemption is used to remove one or more tax rates on a sales transaction. Simphony allows taxes to be exempted or masked in a variety of ways, as listed in the following table.

Table 13-7 Tax-Exempt Methods

Method Description

Touchscreen

Exempt Tax touchscreen buttons provide a manual method of exempting all tax rates or certain tax rates. Only add-on and inclusive (non-VAT) taxes may be exempt. The buttons available include:
  • Function/Tax Exempt: Exempt all or some tax rates on a check, or reapply all or some tax rates if the taxes are already exempted. To exempt specific tax rates, enter the tax rate numbers and/or ranges in the Arguments field separated by commas (for example, 1, 3, 5-15).

  • Function/Tax Exempt Item: Exempt all or some tax rates for a selected menu item or for the entire check, or reapply all or some tax rates if the taxes are already exempted. Only a single inclusive (non-VAT) tax can be exempt using this method. To exempt specific tax rates, enter the tax rate numbers and/or ranges in the Arguments field separated by commas (for example, 1, 3, 5-15).

  • Exempt Tax Rate/<1-64 >

  • Exempt Item Tax Rate/<1-64>

Tender/Media

Tender/Media buttons can exempt tax rates 1-64.

When one of these tenders is applied to a sales transaction, the tax is removed and the balance adjusted.

Tender/Media buttons can be configured as tax exempt coupons, which exempt a prorated portion of the specified taxes.

Serving Periods

Serving periods can mask tax rates. For example, an Entertainment Tax can be masked during serving periods when there is no music.

Order Types

Order types can be used to selectively apply certain tax rates. For example, Dine In and To Go orders may require different taxes. Tax rates active for order types are overridden by the tax mask of the active serving period.

Menu Item Price Tax Class Override

Tax classes specified for a menu item price override the tax class assigned to the Menu Item Class used by the menu item.

Menu Item Group

The tax class applied to a menu item may be overridden based on the quantity of items sold.

See Configuring Tax Based on Menu Item Quantity for more information.

If an inclusive tax exempt summary total is defined in check summary descriptors, it is used in the summary totals section of the workstation check display area, customer displays, and transaction printing.
