Distance
Cabling distance refers to the maximum length a specific cable type can be run without experiencing signal degradation.
The types of cables used in a LAN include Ethernet, coaxial, and fiber optic cables.
Table 7-4 Network Cabling and Distance
| Network Cabling | Maximum Distance |
|---|---|
|
Ethernet |
100 meters |
|
Fast Ethernet |
100 meters to 2000 meters |
|
Gigabit Ethernet |
100 meters to 5000 meters |
|
10 Gigabit Ethernet |
300 meters to 40 kilometers |
|
Coaxial |
500 meters |
|
Fiber Optic |
60 kilometers |
If a longer cable is needed to connect devices, use a network switch or extender to extend the distance or reach of the network segment.
The actual supported cable distance may be significantly shorter, depending on the level of interference present at the installation site.
