Router

A router is a networking device that acts as a gateway, forwarding data packets between different computer networks. It directs network traffic based on destination addresses to ensure efficient data transmission.

The router is positioned between the WAN (Wide Area Network) and the LAN (Local Area Network). On the WAN side, it may connect to a modem, Optical Network Terminal (ONT), or CSU/DSU, while on the LAN side, it connects to networking switches.

Routers may be provided by the WAN network access provider. You may want to upgrade to a router with features not offered by the device supplied by the WAN network access provider.
