Within the Oracle Empirica Signal application, two types of computer processing occur:

  • Foreground or interactive processing, such as the specification of runs.
  • Background or batch processing, such as the execution of runs.

If you are running on a single-processor server, that processor must perform both types of processing. If you are running on a multi-processor server, you can control how the available processors are used to perform foreground or background processing.

On the Server Status page, you to set the maximum number of processors to use for background processing; that is, the number of concurrent runs that can be performed. For a dedicated server, Oracle recommends that you set the maximum to one less than the number of processors that are on the server. For a shared server, Oracle recommends a smaller number of maximum processors.

For example, if there are three processors on a dedicated Oracle Empirica Signal server, and you set the maximum number of processors to 2, then two runs can run at the same time.
