Business Terms
The following terms are used throughout this document:
• DER Device: A DER Device (Distributed Energy Resource device) is any behind-the-meter or grid-connected asset that can generate, store, or controllably consume electricity and (often) can be monitored and/or dispatched. Examples include solar PV inverters, battery energy storage systems, EV chargers, smart thermostats, controllable water heaters, and generators.
Oracle Utilities Edge Distributed Energy Resources Management System treats the device as a grid-operational resource with constraints, measurements, and dispatch behavior. Oracle Utilities Customer Program Management Cloud Service treats the device as a controllable asset that is associated to a Customer and a Program and is used for enrollment, targeting, and performance tracking.
• DR Event: Demand response event is a time-bound, targeted dispatch action that Oracle Utilities Edge Distributed Energy Resources Management System initiates (or coordinates) to temporarily modify customer/DER load or generation in order to support grid or program objectives.
• Strategy in Edge DERMS: The predefined plan or set of rules Oracle Utilities Edge Distributed Energy Resources Management System uses to decide how to control DERs to meet an objective.
• Event in Edge DERMS: A specific, scheduled instance where Oracle Utilities Edge Distributed Energy Resources Management System applies a strategy during a defined time window.
• Stage in Edge DERMS: A step or phase within an event that defines what should happen during part of the event (such as ramp up, sustain, ramp down).
• Program Event in CPMCS: Corresponds to a stage in Oracle Utilities Edge Distributed Energy Resources Management System. It typically represents the operational “instance” of program execution and is commonly used for customer notifications, tracking the event outcome, and performing measurement and verification activities.
• Event Participation in CPMCS: Event Participation refers to the record which captures the details of a customer’s participation in a specific demand response/curtailment event. It is used for tracking whether the customer was selected/reserved for the event, whether they opted-out pre-emptively, and the actual outcome of their device’s participation.
• DER Aggregator: An entity that manages and coordinates a portfolio of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) - such as battery storage, solar PV, EV charging, or flexible loads - and presents them to the utility/market as a controllable resource for programs and events. While Aggregators might enter into bilateral contractual agreements with the utility to provide certain services, they might also bid the aggregated services into wholesale markets directly.
