domain name system (DNS)
A distributed name resolution system that enables computers to locate other computers on a network or the Internet by domain name. The system associates standard Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, such as â00.120.000.168,â with host names, such as âwww.oracle.com.â Machines typically get this information from a DNS server.
