DIMM Population Rules

The Oracle Exadata Storage Server X9-2 supports a fixed base configuration in processor 0 (P0) and processor 1 (P1). Do not attempt to install any other DIMM sizes or DIMM types in the server.

Each processor, P0 and P1, has sixteen DIMM slots organized into eight memory channels. Each memory channel contains two DIMM slots: a black DIMM slot (channel slot 0) and a white DIMM slot (channel slot 1).

The physical layout of the DIMMs and processor(s) is shown in the following figure (when viewing the server from the front), along with the general DIMM installation order. The installation order specific to your server configuration follows the figure.

Note:

In single processor systems, the DIMM slots associated with processor 1 (P1) are nonfunctional. Do not populate P1 slots with DIMMs in single processor systems.

2

DIMM installation order (black slots populated first, followed by white slots):

  • Top row - For 16 DIMMs

  • Bottom row - For 12 DIMMs

Note: With dual processor systems, always start installing DIMMs in the P0 processor and then alternate between the processors. For example, start with the first DIMM slot in the P0 processor (DIMM slot 0), and then move to the first DIMM slot in the P1 processor (DIMM slot 0). Continue with the second DIMM slot in the P0 processor (DIMM slot 15), followed by the second DIMM slot in the P1 processor (DIMM slot 15), and so on.

Memory channels - Eight per processor, each containing a set of two DIMM slots: one black and one white

The population rules for adding DIMMs to the server, based on the server configuration, are as follows:

Server DIMM Population Rules

Oracle Exadata Storage Server X9-2 EF and HC

  • The server supports a fixed base configuration of sixteen 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs (256 GB), or a configuration that supports twelve 128 GB Persistent Memory (PMeM) DIMMs, per processor, for a maximum of twelve PMeM DIMMs alongside sixteen 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs in the same memory channel.

  • If your memory configuration supports only 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs, populate only the black DIMM slot (channel slot 0) within each memory channel for processors P0 and P1.

  • If your memory configuration supports PMeM DIMMs and DDR4 DIMMs, populate each processor socket with six 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs and twelve 128 GB PMeM DIMMs. Populate DDR4 DIMMs in each black DIMM slot (channel slot 0) and populate PMeM DIMMs in each white DIMM slot (channel slot 1).

Oracle Exadata Storage Server X9-2 XT

  • The server supports a fixed base configuration of six 16 GB DDR4 DIMMs. Do not attempt to install any other DIMM sizes in the server.

  • Populate only the black DIMM slot (channel slot 0) within each memory channel for processor P0.
