This image shows the growth progression of a WebSphere Application Server (WAS) from a single-node cell to a multi-node cell.

The single-node cell shows nested elements in the basic cell including:

• Virtual machine 1 contains profile 1
• Profile 1 contains node 1
• Node 1 contains an application server and a Deployment Manager and WAS administration console
• The application server contains applications A1 and A2

The mulit-node cell shows two virtual machines communicating over a message bus. Virtual machine 1 is similar to that in the basic cell, except that it includes 2 application servers with applications. Virtual machine 2 includes:

• Profiles 2 and 3
• Profile 2 contains node 2 and profile 3 contains node 3
• Each node contains 2 application servers and a node agent to interface with the deployment manager and WAS administration console in virtual machine 1
• Each application server contains applications A1 and A2
