Prosperdtx: Data Science Platform Deployment on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Prosper Digital Therapeutics improves the quality of care and delivers better outcomes across integrated health networks. Prosper Digital Therapeutics combines patient data interoperability with machine learning and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Data Science in the delivery of healthcare.

Prosper Digital Therapeutics began during the COVID-19 pandemic with a mission to identify patient characteristics, treatment steps, and medications that correlate or predict survival, overall cost, and healthcare resource utilization in patients with COVID-19. These results enabled Prosper Digital Therapeutics and CareOne to develop a framework for assessing the clinical value and total cost of different care strategies.

Prosper Digital Therapeutics initially explored an on-premises solution but realized it would require significant time to procure and set up the infrastructure.

Prosper Digital Therapeutics needed artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to build various predictive models based on the data set collected from CareOne or other sources. The solution also needed the following:

  • HIPAA-compliant storage for both structured and unstructured data with quick retrieval or long-term archival
  • Data Science environment and machine learning tools
  • Database with quick deployment that is scalable and autonomous
  • Rapid development of applications (APEX)
  • Integration with third-party applications

Architecture

Prosper Digital Therapeutics needed to rapidly deploy an architecture that could securely handle large amounts of source data to build predictive models and then leverage the models in rapidly developed applications. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure provided all the needed infrastructure and readily available solutions that could be launched with a few clicks.

Large client data files, such as SQL databases, must be securely stored and then loaded into another database for processing. The confidentiality of the data requires strong security, a high degree of reliability and durability, and quick retrieval. Prosper Digital Therapeutics was able to build the Data Science platform on top of Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse in a short amount of time. This rapid deployment enabled Prosper Digital Therapeutics to create much-needed learning models for their mission-critical applications. Oracle Application Express (APEX) platform service helped developers start building applications relevant to the solution.

Prosper Digital Therapeutics plans to continue to bring in data, such as imaging records, electronic health records, and wearable device data. They're developing a direct-to-consumer platform using Oracle Application Express. Data from wearable devices is directly streamed through applications to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and interoperability tools available in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure route data automatically to either Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage or Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse. Finally, data in a data catalog is made available to research partners and academia.

The following diagram illustrates the architecture that Prosper Digital Therapeutics deployed.

The architecture has the following components:
  • Object storage

Object storage provides quick access to large amounts of structured and unstructured data of any content type, including database backups, analytic data, and rich content such as images and videos. You can safely and securely store and then retrieve data directly from the internet or from within the cloud platform. You can seamlessly scale storage without experiencing any degradation in performance or service reliability. Use standard storage for "hot" storage that you need to access quickly, immediately, and frequently. Use archive storage for "cold" storage that you retain for long periods of time and seldom or rarely access.

  • Autonomous Data Warehouse

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse is a self-driving, self-securing, self-repairing database service that is optimized for data warehousing workloads. You do not need to configure or manage any hardware, or install any software. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure handles creating the database, as well as backing up, patching, upgrading, and tuning the database.

  • Data science

Data Science provides infrastructure, open source technologies, libraries, and packages, and data science tools for data science teams to build, train, and manage machine learning (ML) models in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The collaborative and project-driven workspace provides an end-to-end cohesive user experience and supports the lifecycle of predictive models.

  • Applications

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a low cost Oracle Cloud service that offers convenient access to the Oracle Application Express platform for rapidly building and deploying low-code applications. Oracle Application Express provides you with an easy-to-use browser-based environment to load data, manage database objects, develop REST interfaces, and build applications which look and run great on both desktop and mobile devices.
