Start Managed Servers from the Administration Console

Before you begin

  1. If you have not already done so, create a Managed Server. See Create Managed Servers.
  2. Configure the Managed Server to communicate with a Node Manager. Node Manager is a WebLogic Server utility that lets you start, stop, and suspend server instances, and automatically restart servers remotely. Node Manager must run on each computer that hosts WebLogic Server instances that you want to control with Node Manager. Configure each computer as a Machine in WebLogic Server, and assign each server instance that you will control with Node Manager to the machine upon which it runs. See Create and configure machines, Assign server instances to machines, and Configure startup arguments for Managed Servers. For more information, see Administering Node Manager for Oracle WebLogic Server.
  3. Start the Node Manager on the computer that you want to host the Managed Server. The WebLogic Server custom installation process optionally installs and starts Node Manager as a Windows service on Windows systems. If it's not already running, you can start Node Manager manually at a command prompt or with a script. See Administering Node Manager for Oracle WebLogic Server. On Windows, you can start the Node Manager using a shortcut on the Start menu (Tools > Node Manager).
  4. (Optional) Specify a startup mode.

A Managed Server is a WebLogic Server instance that runs deployed applications. It refers to the Administration Server for all of its configuration and deployment information. Usually, you use Managed Servers to run applications in a production environment. For more information about Managed Servers and Administration Servers, see Understanding Domain Configuration for Oracle WebLogic Server.

To use the Administration Console to start Managed Servers:

  1. In the left pane of the Console, expand Environment and select Servers.
  2. In the Servers table, click the name of the Managed Server instance you want to start.
  3. Select Control > Start/Stop.
  4. In the Server Status table, select the check box next to the name of the server you want to start and click Start.
  5. On the Server Life Cycle Assistant page, click Yes to confirm.

    The Node Manager starts the server on the target machine. When the Node Manager finishes its start sequence, the server's state is indicated in the State column in the Server Status table.

    To view messages that the Node Manager generated while starting the server, see View Remote Start Output. These messages are also written to the Node Manager log file for that server, as described in Administering Node Manager for Oracle WebLogic Server.
