Predefined Sales and Operations Planning Exceptions

The basis for all predefined sales and operations planning exceptions is Measure. The following table lists the predefined sales and operations planning exception reports, their descriptions, the base measure used for the exception, and the levels.

Description

Base Measure

Levels

Demand Quantity Not Satisfied

The satisfied demand (Constrained Forecast measure) is less than the required demand (Net Demand measure) for a planning time bucket. This exception can occur if lead times are enforced or capacity constraints are considered. When this occurs, demand is backordered (Backorder measure).

Items Below Safety Stock

The projected available balance (Projected Available Balance measure) is below the specified safety stock (Safety Stock measure) level for a planning time bucket. If the exception extends beyond one time bucket then the planning process reports one exception with the start and end dates to reflect the duration.

Items with a Shortage

The projected available balance (Projected Available Balance measure) has a negative value for a planning time bucket. It's unlikely for this exception to occur in a sales and operations plan.

Resource Overloaded

The resource utilization (Resource Utilization Percentage measure) exceeds 100 percent for a planning time bucket. If the exception extends beyond one time bucket then the planning process reports one exception with the start and end dates to reflect the duration. In a sales and operations plan that considers work center capacity constraints, it's still possible for resources in a work center to be overloaded.

Work Center Overloaded

The work center utilization (Resource Utilization Percentage measure) is greater than or equal to 100 percent for a planning time bucket. If the exception extends beyond one time bucket then the planning process reports one exception with the start and end dates to reflect the duration. In a sales and operations plan that considers work center capacity constraints, it's still possible for resources in a constrained work center to be overloaded. Additionally, only the capacity for Constrained Work Center Level Members are considered, whereas other work centers are unconstrained and can exceed 100 percent.

Supplier Capacity Overloaded

The supplier item capacity utilization (Supplier Capacity Utilization Percentage measure) exceeds 100 percent for a planning time bucket. If the exception extends beyond one time bucket then the planning process reports one exception with the start and end dates to reflect the duration. In a sales and operations plan that considers supplier capacity constraints, it's still possible for supplier items in a category to be overloaded.

Supplier Category Capacity Overloaded

The supplier category capacity utilization (Supplier Capacity Utilization Percentage measure) is greater than or equal to 100 percent for a planning time bucket. If the exception extends beyond one time bucket then the planning process reports one exception with the start and end dates to reflect the duration. In a sales and operations plan that considers supplier capacity constraints, it's still possible for supplier items in a category to be overloaded.

Lead Time Compression

This exception can occur for a planning time bucket when purchasing and transfer lead time compression is allowed. The exception quantity is the number of time buckets that have been compressed. For example, if a supplier item has a 3-month lead time and the item is required in 2 months, then the exception quantity is 1. If the Allow purchasing and transfer lead time compression plan option isn't selected, then a Demand Quantity not Satisfied exception can occur.
