Modifying Inspection Requests

You can reschedule, postpone, or cancel an inspection, depending on different factors, including the scheduling method of the inspection type and agency settings for public users.

Agency staff can always cancel inspections and postpone scheduled or requested inspections, but registered public users can only postpone or cancel inspections based on the agency-level options for permits and business licenses. Agency staff and registered public users can modify an inspection request on the Inspection request page and Inspections list pages. Registered public users can only cancel an inspection on the inspection request page, if allowed at the agency-level for permits and business licenses.

Note: You can't reschedule, postpone, or cancel an inspection if the time falls after the schedule change cutoff time set up by the agency. For more information about schedule change policies, see Setting Up Inspection Types.

This table provides details about when you can cancel, postpone, and reschedule inspections, based on the scheduling method of the inspection type and the inspection status.

Canceling an Inspection

Agency staff can manually cancel inspections, and registered public users can cancel their inspections, depending on the agency-level setup for permits or business licenses. Inspections are also canceled automatically when an agency staff member withdraws the application associated with the request. Canceling an inspection permanently removes the inspection appointment; if needed, you can schedule a new inspection.

Note: Depending on agency-level setup for permits or business licenses, public users may be able to cancel any of their inspections, none of them, or only the inspections that aren't required for the application. Registered public users only see the Cancel Inspection button, when available, on the Inspection request page. For more information, see Setting Up Agency-Level Options for Permits and Setting Up Agency-Level Options for Business Licenses.

The Cancel Inspection action isn't available for inspections with a status of Canceled or Completed. In addition, the action isn't available once the time to the scheduled inspection is less than the number of hours defined in the Schedule Change Policy field for the inspection type.

  1. Select the Cancel Inspection option.

  2. Enter a Cancellation Reason on the Cancel Inspection modal page. Your agency may require comments, depending on settings in the agency options.

  3. Click Confirm.

When you or the applicant cancel an inspection, the applicant, inspection contact, inspector, and inspection supervisor may receive a notification, depending on the communication template setup.

Rescheduling an Inspection

Agency staff and registered public users can select the Reschedule option to remove inspections from the schedule and request or select a different time or date, depending on the scheduling method for the inspection type. For inspections configured with the Ready scheduling method, you enter a new date and time when the work is ready to be inspected. For inspections configured with the Request scheduling method, you enter a new preferred date and time. Depending on your agency's setup, you may only be required to enter a date.

If an inspection time has already been selected for an inspection with the Schedule scheduling method, agency staff can click the Select a Different Time button to select a different inspection date or date and time on the Scheduling modal page.

Note: The Reschedule option isn't available once the time to the scheduled inspection is less than the number of hours defined in the Schedule Change Policy field for the inspection type.

When you or the applicant reschedule an inspection, the applicant, inspection contact, inspector, and inspection supervisor can receive a notification, depending on the communication template setup.

Postponing an Inspection

Select the Postpone option to take an inspection off the schedule. This action moves the inspection into the Pending status. You can postpone inspections that have been requested or scheduled status when you want to wait to schedule the inspection. Agency staff can always postpone inspections, but registered public users can only postpone or cancel inspections based on the agency-level options for permits and business licenses.
