How You Set Up Items in Product Information Management
Assets that are maintained require an inventory item that's asset tracked and serial controlled. These items are defined and managed in the Product Information Management work area, using the Manage Items task flow.
Here are the suggested setups:

If Enable Asset Tracking is set to Customer Asset Tracking, then can't set Create Maintenance Work Orders for the asset. |

Select the check box. You can only create maintenance work orders for an asset that's based on an item that has this check box selected. When assets are created based on an item that's set to Full Lifecycle and the Enable Asset Maintenance is selected, then these asset attributes are selected by default, but can be edited:
Note:

Select the check box. |
Specifications Tab > Inventory > Serial |

Set up serial number control to one of these values:
|
Specifications Tab > Inventory > Serial |
Starting Prefix |
Optionally you can define a starting prefix for the serial number. |
Specifications Tab > Inventory > Serial |
Starting Number |
Optionally you can define a starting number for the serial number. If a prefix is also defined, then both of these values are concatenated together. |
Manufacturing Tab > Item Structure |
Structure Item Type |
Set to Standard. This value is required to manage asset physical hierarchies. |
Item > Associations Tab |
Associated Organizations |
You must define one or more organizations for an item. First, you must define a master organization. Then, you must define every child inventory organization in which you create and manage assets. This includes the organizations not only where the asset operates, but also those organizations that are enabled for maintenance and in which maintenance work orders are created to maintain the asset. Additionally, assets support cross-organization creation of work orders. Therefore, we recommend you to associate all related organizations where an asset may be maintained through a maintenance work order. |
Item > Header Region |
Manage Attachments Add icon |
You can optionally upload images as attachments in the Item header region using the Add icon. While generically called Manage Attachments, this capability is intended to also support the upload one or many files of an image file type. After being uploaded, the images are previewed in the header details region. Additional images can be uploaded, existing images deleted, and so on, using the Attachments dialogue box. If you select an image in the list of files and click the Set as Primary button, then it's marked as the primary image. If an item has a primary image defined, then each new asset that's created will automatically inherit this image in the asset record. |
