Track progress with task output quantities

Measure and track work using output quantities, also known as work quantities. Output quantities represent measurable units of work, such as kilometers of pipeline installed or cubic feet of concrete poured. As quantities are completed, they can drive task percent complete, support billing, and enable productivity analysis.

Project managers can plan and capture physical work quantities for financial tasks, and then compare completed output with the corresponding resource input. This provides an objective way to measure physical progress and assess productivity against the planned benchmark.

Use task output quantities and productivity to:

  • Define expected physical work against lowest-level tasks with planned output quantity and unit of measure.
  • Capture actual output through progress entry and use method 'Output Units' to calculate physical percent complete for lowest-level tasks.
  • Review planned productivity, actual productivity, and the productivity index in the Manage Resources dialog box and Progress tab of the Manage Financial Project Plan page.
  • Load supported output quantity and productivity values through 'Import Projects', 'Import Project Tasks' and 'Import Project Progress' FBDI's. Similarly, load and retrieve output quantity and productivity values through 'Financial Project Plan' and 'Project Progress' REST API's.

The business benefits are:

  • Consistent measurement of output quantities ensures precise billing and revenue recognition and provides improved billing accuracy.
  • Captured quantities enable analysis of labor productivity, supports data-driven decision-making, and offers better resource utilization insights.

Tips and considerations

  1. In the Manage Financial Project Plan pageselect Columns from the View menu and add the output quantity and productivity columns that are hidden by default.
  2. To calculate quantity-based physical percent complete, select Output Units as the Physical Percent Complete Calculation Method for the lowest-level task.
