Solaris 8 Advanced Installation Guide

Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program

The Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program on the Solaris 8 Software 1 of 2 CD can be run with a GUI or with a CLI. The Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program guides you step-by-step through installing or upgrading to the Solaris 8 software. The Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program only installs the Solaris software. After you install the Solaris software, you need to use other installation programs to install additional software.

The Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program installs the Solaris operating environment without installing additional software. Consequently, you might find that this installation method installs the operating system a bit faster than the Solaris Web Start program. Also, the Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program does not require a minimum swap partition on your system as the Solaris Web Start program does.

If you have an existing system that contains data that you do not want to lose, the Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program enables you to preserve file system data during an initial installation.

The Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program does not prompt you to install third–party applications or network downloadable software. You must install third–party applications after you have installed the Solaris operating environment. Also, as in the Solaris Web Start program, you are prompted to enter system configuration information during installation, so this is not the most efficient installation method for installing several systems.
