Preinstallation Tasks


For important preinstallation considerations, see the section titled "Configuring an e.Reporting System user account" in Installing Actuate e.Reporting System guide. (This guide is available on the Siebel eBusiness Third-Party Bookshelf under Actuate.) Read this section carefully and discuss it with your system administrator so that an account for the Siebel Reports Server can be allocated.

Note the following information when installing the Actuate e.Reporting System:

Before installing the Actuate components on your machine, install the Java Development Kit (JDK), and establish a new system variable. The JDK is required for Actuate e.Reporting Server, Actuate Management Console, and Actuate Active Portal.

NOTE:  These instructions assume that the Actuate components are installed on one machine. If the Actuate components are installed on multiple machines make sure that JDK is installed on all of these machines.

To install the Java Development Kit

  1. Insert the Windows Server Ancillary Programs, Language (where Language is the Language Pack you want to deploy) CD 1 of 3 into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the following directory:
  3. Thirdpty\actuate\language\dist\j2se

    Where:

    language = the Siebel code for the Language Pack you installed; for example, enu for U.S. English.

  4. Double-click j2sdk-1_3_1_03-win.exe.

Follow the remaining installation steps from the InstallShield Wizard. After the JDK install is complete, an environment variable, JAVA_HOME, needs to be defined.

To set the JAVA_HOME variable

  1. From the Windows Desktop, right-click My Computer and choose Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables.
  2. Click New in System variables section.
  3. In the New System Variable pop-up window, type JAVA_HOME as the Variable Name.
  4. While still in the New System Variable pop-up window, type the path for the JDK (for example, C:\jdk1.3.1_03) as the Variable Value. Click OK.
  5. Continue clicking OK until you exit System Properties.

At a later point, you will need to use this variable. For now, continue with the installation of the Actuate e.Reporting Server.

CAUTION:  To install Siebel eBusiness Applications, you must have 50-100 MB of disk space on your system drive (usually your C: drive) even if you intend to install Siebel eBusiness Applications onto another drive.
