This chapter describes the name service switch, what it does, and how clients use it to obtain naming information from one or more sources. You use the name service switch to coordinate usage of different naming services. For an overview of the Solaris naming and directory services DNS, NIS and LDAP, see Chapter 1, Naming and Directory Services (Overview), in System Administration Guide: Naming and Directory Services (DNS, NIS, and LDAP).
