Appendix C Using the Keyboard to Navigate Email and Calendar

This appendix describes how to navigate Email and Calendar from the keyboard only. Users who have difficulty using a mouse or other pointing device can navigate and use Email and Calendar from the keyboard.

Email Functions

Table C–1 lists the keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform general email functions.

Move focus between the following interface items, in the following order: 

  • Folder pane

  • The elements in the searchbar

  • Message list

  • If the preview pane is displayed, the active elements in the selected message, such as the To and From email addresses.

Shift + Tab

Move focus between the interface items listed for the Tab key, in reverse order.

Table C–2 lists the keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform message list functions.

Move focus between the active elements in the message from the top to the bottom. Active elements include the following: 

  • To and From email addresses.

  • HTML elements.

  • Buttons that represent attachments.

  • If an attachment is displayed within the message, active elements within the attachment.

Shift + Tab

Move focus between the elements listed for the Tab key, in reverse order.

Return

Perform the default action on the element that has focus. For example, if the right side of an attachment button is selected, press Return to open a popup menu that enables you to perform actions on the attachment.

Ctrl + Tab

When you view a message in the preview pane, move the focus to the folder pane. 

Ctrl + Shift + Tab

When you view a message in the preview pane, move the focus to the message list. 

F7

Turns caret mode on and off. Caret mode enables you to use the keyboard to select text when you view a message.

Calendar Functions

Table C–4 lists the keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform general calendar functions.

  • Folder pane.

  • The elements in the searchbar.

  • The events that are displayed in the schedule pane.

  • In day view and work week view, the first time segment of the selected day in the schedule pane. In week view and month view, the header of the selected day in the schedule pane.

  • The selected day in the date pane.

  • In the date pane, the left arrow button which displays the previous month.

  • In the date pane, the right arrow button which displays the next month.

  • Task pane.

When the focus is on the schedule pane, you must use the Ctrl + Tab key combination to navigate to the date pane.

Ctrl + Tab

Move focus between the following interface items, in the following order: 

  • Folder pane

  • Searchbar

When the focus is on the schedule pane, press Ctrl + Tab twice to move focus to the folder pane.

Table C–5 lists the keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform calendar functions when you use the day view. The keyboard shortcuts are relevant only to the part of window that displays the day information.

Move the start time of the selected event to the previous time segment. 

Ctrl + Shift + down arrow

Make the end time of the selected event one time segment later. 

Ctrl + Shift + up arrow

Make the end time of the selected event one time segment earlier. 

Alt + left arrow

Go to the same day in the previous week. 

Alt + right arrow

Go to the same day in the next week. 

Alt + Home

Go to the first day of the selected week. 

Alt + End

Go to the last day of the selected week. 

Alt + Page Up

Go to the first day of the selected month. 

Alt + Page Down

Go to the last day of the selected month. 

Home

Select the first time segment of your work day. 

End

Select the last time segment of your work day. 

Ctrl + O

Open the selected event in the Appointment window.

Shift + F10

Open the popup menu.

Task Functions

Table C–7 lists the keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform task functions when you use a tasks folder, or the task pane.

Select or deselect the task status column for the selected task.

Open the selected task in the Task window.
